	The Halo Benders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Halo Benders are a band formed in 1994 as a side project by Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening and Doug Martsch of Built to Spill.
		All three of the band's albums were released on Johnson's influential Olympia record label, K Records.
		The Halo Benders' music is characterised by untraditional sounds, movements, and song structures.

		Built to Spill are currently winding up their "Ancient Melodies of the Future" tour in Portland, OR and Seattle, WA and invited Calvin onstage to perform "Don't Touch My Bikini" and "Love Travels Faster" among others, ending with a daring 15 minute version of "Freebird" to close the set.
		For someone like me who's been wanting to see The Halo Benders for quite some time, this was an especially nice treat.

		In fact, the new Halo Benders album, The Rebels Not In, is already ancient history to him -- he's busy working on upcoming K releases by ICU, D+, Gaze and Cadillaca, plus a various-artists compilation titled Selector Dub Narcotic.

		The Halo Benders demonstrated this fact on their first album, God Don't Make No Junk, which amazingly transformed musical and lyrical clichés into a bunch of witty, addictive tunes.
		They have instrumentation that is spare enough to highlight the dry hilarity of their lyrics, but still manages to at once conjure up melancholic thoughts of go-go bands and lounge acts from the '60s.
		My hypothesis is that the success of God Don't Make no Junk made the Halo Benders a little too conscious of what they were supposed to sound like.

	The Halo Benders
		In 1994, the Halo Benders issued their debut 7", "Canned Oxygen," on Atlas Records, and soon followed it with their first full-length album, God Don't Make No Junk, on Johnson's K Records.

		The Halo Benders initially seemed like a one-off featuring the talents of Doug Martsch (from Built To Spill) and Calvin Johnson (from Beat Happening), but has, by some great miracle become a regular band.
		The Rebels Not In is their third record together and the songs are just as fun to sing along with as they always are.
		The new record holds up suprising well when pitted against the Benders' earlier stuff and while there's nothing as compelling as their first hit single, "Don't Touch My Bikini," but songs like "Virginia Reel Around The Fountain" and "Foggy Bottom" come pretty close.
