Handsworth Riots - Twenty Summers On is the name of an exhibition of photographs taken by Pogus Caesar during and in the wake of the Handsworth Riots, 9th - 11 September 1985.
September 1985: The days are warm and sunny, thousands of dancing revellers many in brightly coloured costumes are pouring into the streets of Handsworth, an area of Birmingham well known for its rich and vibrant cultural mix.
This year 2005 is the 20th anniversary of the events that exploded onto the streets of Lozells and Handsworth.

Handsworth Park (originally Victoria Park) is a park in the Handsworth area of Birmingham, England.
Handsworth Victoria Park was founded in the 1880s by the Handsworth Local Sanitary Board - a body instituted by the government, and led by locally elected citizens, to oversee the supply of clean water and the laying down of sewers for the growing population of the area.
From the 1970s the Handsworth Carnival (now removed to Perry Park (Birmingham), Perry Barr, as Birmingham International Carnival, having been said by the acting Head of Parks to have “outgrown Handsworth Park”) and later the festival of Vaisakhi.

Caribbean style carnivals were held in Handsworth Park there, from 1984 – 1994.
The following year, the carnival moved from the park out onto the streets of Handsworth, since which time it was known as the Birmingham Carnival.

So I turned on the radio and television and they were talking about this incident in Handsworth where a guy had been stopped for a minor traffic offence.
Handsworth is a very vibrant place: it is one of the most multi cultural places in the whole of Birmingham.
If you look back now 20 years on it has changed for the better in some ways but the money that was promised to be put in to the community, a lot people can’t see it.

I was brought up in Handsworth and can truely relate to Ben when he speaks of the days when there was a peaceful community.
We don't have the carnival at handsworth park, thats been taken away from us, fl history month has been taken away from us, there is no where for fl people of all generations to socialise, so many things are happening in this city to us and I don't see anybody doing anything about it.

One of the outstanding features of Black art, culture and entertainment in the City is the Birmingham Carnival which is held annually during the first weekend in August.
The Birmingham Carnival was started, by Textflint, in 1984 as the Handsworth Carnival and has continued to be held, ever since.
