The Harmonicats - Music Downloads - Online
Applying their harmonica arrangements mostly to popular standards, their sound was unusual for that (or indeed any) era, achieving a full ensemble effect via instruments that are rarely used in tandem in popular music.
The Harmonicats were still recording for Columbia in the late '60s and tried their hand at contemporary material like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Get Off of My Cloud" on their 1966 LP What's New, Harmonicats?.
The Harmonicats continued performing even after the Murad's death in 1996.

 The Miklas Family
George is a former member of the famous Jerry Murad's Harmonicats.
He is the only "Harmonicat" to have played both Bass and Chord accompanyment harmonicas on stage with the Harmonicats, and he was the youngest member ever.
While performing with the Harmonicats in 1985, Miklas (then 20 years old) went on stage with the Harmonicats and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Richard Hayman for two concerts on the orchestra's pops series.

Only a decade later, Fiore would be known as a founding member of the most famous of all harmonica groups, as the player who recorded the harmonica solo heard 'round the world, and as the chord harmonica player who set the standard for all who followed him.
The name "Harmonicats" was thought up by Don Les when the group was going to play the College Inn; the hotel agent Ernest Byfield was impressed with the group, but the name the "Madcaps" had to go.
Thus was born the "Harmonicats," stars of stage, TV and radio.

Orchestral Harmonicas - Coast to Coast Music - Harmonica Lessons, Harmonicas and Accessories
The concept of a harmonica trio, consisting primarily of the chromatic (and/or diatonic) harmonica, chord harmonica, and bass harmonica, existed well before the advent of the Harmonicats, later known as Jerry Murad's Harmonicats.
But it was in fact the Harmonicats who brought it to the attention of the masses with their hugely successful recording of the 1913 show tune, "Peg O' My Heart", in April of 1947.
The Harmonicats then became the benchmark, by which all succeeding harmonica trios are judged.

It was a Vitacoustic record by the Harmonicats (three harmonicas and a guitar) that brought back this charmingly unpretentious ballad of the past.
The song was on the Hit Parade for 20 weeks, 10 times at the top.
Top ranking bands were those conducted by Ted Weems, Eddy Howard and Francis Craig; smaller combinations such as the Harmonicats, the Three Suns and the King Cole Trio were also prominent.

 Danny
Danny is a veteran of many well-known harmonica groups: the Harmonicats, Don Les' Harmonicats, Lee Oskar and Friends, and more, before he joined forces with the New World Harmonica Trio.
And when the Harmonicats did "Peg O' My Heart" they were not looking for a "hit" as such, but their engineer recorded them in such a way that it was a whole new sound -- with the reverberation, the echo -- plus the electronic harmonica sound.
It's hard to say if it's as strong as it ever was, but certainly back when the Harmonicats were recording, a lot of new groups were prompted to form here and especially in Europe.

 Harmonica Bands History | sjpc_02_package.xml
Bands of har-monica players became famous on the vaudeville circuit, on radio, and in Hollywood films; whole orchestras of harmonica-playing youth were organized in cities all over the United States, and public schools offered harmonica instruction courses.
A ban on German goods prohibited the importation of harmonicas from Germany, where the highest-quality instruments were made; youth orchestras disbanded and schools halted their instruction programs; and large harmonica bands pared down to smaller units, usually trios.
The Harmonicats went on to record 36 albums, and Murad kept the trio alive (Les retired in 1972, Fiore in 1982) until his death in1996.

It wasn't long before the company relocated to Chicago, and it was there, in 1947, that Putnam recorded what is generally accepted to be the first "pop" record to use artificial reverberation.
The founder of the group The Harmonicats, Jerry Murad, wanted to record using an echo chamber like he'd heard on effects in spooky radio mysteries.
The Harmonicats song "Peg-O-My-Heart," became the first million seller smash with more than 1,400,000 copies sold, and the rest was, well, history.

 The Vitacoustic Label
In February of 1947, the Harmonicats approached Bill Putnam about recording some of their material, but they couldn't afford the rates (Putnam was charging $108 for a 3-hour, 4-tune session).
Fisher also claimed that he was entitled to appear in theaters with the Harmonicats; that claim was not dismissed on July 3, but nothing more was heard about it in the pages of the trade papers.
Putnam appears to have succeeded, because the Harmonicat masters were not included later on in the list of things to be auctioned off (we don't know whether the projected album on his Universal label ever happened, though).

 Jerry Murad and the Harmonicats
They were the top-selling of all harmonica groups, with a #1 hit in 1947: "Peg O' My Heart." They benefited from reduced competition: this was during a musician's union strike, and the harmonica was not considered a musical instrument.
The Harmonicats recorded for Columbia through the mid-1950s, switched to Mercury for a few years, then returned to Columbia until the late 1960s.
Jerry Murad carried on with new versions of the Harmonicats until his death in 1996.

Music Leaves Its Mark on the Brain
By monitoring the brains of people listening to classical scales and key progressions, scientists at Dartmouth College glimpsed the biology of the hit-making machinery of popular song.
Focusing on the structure of Western music, researchers show how the musical mind hears the flat notes in Flatt and Scruggs, the sharps of the Harmonicats and all five octaves in pop diva Mariah Carey's repertoire.
The flash-dance of these brain circuits, which process the harmonic relationship of musical notes, is shaped by a human craving for melody that drives people to spend more every year on music than on prescription drugs.

Leo Diamond - Biography - AOL Music
Unlike even the other "controversial" instruments, however, the harmonica has had very few exponents of real talent and inspiration.
The Harmonicats and Leo Diamond each had a few fine moments, but the harmonica itself was not responsible for any musical magic.
Leo Diamond's triumph was being able to record expensively produced, relatively imaginative albums despite his chosen instrument.
