The Harvey Girls (1946)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
During the filming of "The Harvey Girls", Garland was one of the top box-office draws in the nation, and Hollywood's most versatile actress.
The ranks of the Harvey girls are filled by some of Hollywood's most marvelous character actresses, including Marjorie Main and Virginia O'Brien, and the dancer Cyd Charisse in one of her first roles.
The film boasts what New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther appreciatively called "an abundance of chromatic spectacle and an uncommonly good score", the centerpiece of which is the Academy Award-winning song of the year (1946), "On The Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe".

 Switchblade Romance/High Tension/Haute Tension (2003)
Both films share that silent assailant factor, coupled with a raw fear and anxiety for survival, and combined with a collection of scenes in which there are long silences and almost unbearable intensity.
In this film, from director Alexandre Aja, the son of director Alexandre Arcady and currently co-writing a remake of The Hills Have Eyes, the high tension is typically awarded by some horribly grisly dead from which there is no escape.
What makes this film unique and what made it even more interesting for me, as well as a number of audiences at Cannes, is the psychological twist involving the killer.

The fictional Harvey Girls is set in Sandrock, where the traveling waitresses are joined by a sort of mail-order bride (Judy Garland) whose prospective husband is a bust--he's a roughhewn rancher played by Chill Wills.
One of the most lavish of 40s MGM musicals, THE HARVEY GIRLS really shows off Judy Garland's considerable comedy skills, which she rarely got much of a chance to work with, and also shows her off at her absolute most unearthly beauty.
The rest of the film isn't up to Garland's level or the level of those two songs, although the hokey plot--about how the upright and starched Harvey Girls bring such an attractive wholesomeness to the Wild West that all the temptations of sin wilt before them--demonstrates pretty much the MGM moral ethos of the time.

The album's standout track is "Girls Sing," which begins with an almost identical chord progression to the Ronettes '60s classic, "Be My Baby." The vocals on the track are outstanding, and the instrumentation gives an already catching song a truly stirring feel.
