Topic: The Hasty Hare

Marvin the Martian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
So, he decided to create the opposite type of character; one who was quiet and soft-spoken, but whose actions were incredibly destructive and legitimately dangerous.
Marvin was never named in the original shorts (he was called Commander X-2 in The Hasty Hare in 1952), but decades later when the character attracted merchandizing interest he obviously needed a name, so the current one was selected.
The latter reuses his original name from The Hasty Hare.) Over a decade prior to that, he guest-starred in a Tiny Toon Adventures segment titled "Duck Dodgers Jr.", where he was accompanied by an apprentice named Marcia the Martian.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Marvin the Martian - Space Tunes at Epinions.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
In Haredevil Hare (1948), Bugs Bunny is chosen to be the first 'passenger' to the moon (as usual, he was lured by carrots...); he delivers a vast set of grimaces upon his arrival.
In Mad as a Mars Hare (1963), Bugs has once again been lured by carrots (his 'baser reflexes', as he terms them) and ends up on a strange planet; he has to claim it in Earth's name, but finds out that another guest (Marvin the Martian) is already there.
As in every compilation, not all the films are as good; also, seeing all 12 films in a row might be a bit deceiving, given the common elements that many of these cartoons share (especially the Bugs/Marvin shorts).

Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Marvin the Martian
The Martian without a name first appeared in Haredevil Hare (released July 24, 1948), in which Bugs Bunny became the first living thing to set foot on the Moon, only to become immediately involved in a struggle with the second, an odd little alien who landed moments later.
Marvin's best-known role was in Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century (1953), where he and Daffy Duck (assisted by Porky Pig) vied for control of Planet X in a hilarious send-up of Buck Rogers and every other sci-fi shoot-'em-up.
The former was notable for its highly unusual and stylized setting — a space city, full of planes and angles, apparently made of glass, and designed by art director/background man Maurice Noble.

A sergeant, not unlike the bully construction worker in Homeless Hare (Jones, 1950), upon learning the name of the new recruit, makes a sarcastic reference to himself as Sgt. Porky Pig, only to be topped by a colonel who refers to himself as Col. Puddy Tat and also refers to a General Tweety Pie.
It is his ability to time the repetition of these gags, particularly in a sequence where we see only Sam going up a ladder, a pause, and then Sam going down to a dive to splash off-screen, that really makes the cartoon work.
An exceptional Freleng caricature is seen in Hasty Hare (Jones, 1952), in which he is caricatured as I. Frisby, the head of the Shalomar Observatory.

Thanks to the merger between Turner Entertainment and Time-Warner, this series, for the first time in history, was able to feature shorts from the pre-1948 Warner cartoon library on the same tape as post-48 cartoons.
The first of which was "Haredevil Hare" on the 1998 release of MARVIN THE MARTIAN: SPACE TUNES.
Due to the fact that Warners plans to promote this series the "next generation" of Looney Tunes videos, nearly every previous Warner Home Video and every MGM/UA Home Video release was discontinued in 1999.
