Topic: The Haunting (1963 film)

  The Haunting (1963)
Hill House, the eerie environment of The Haunting is unbelievable, vast staircases that seem to be be endless, towering walls with windows, that seem to be, and might actually be, starting at you, and an exterior that should have earned The Haunting an Academy Award for Cinematography.
The Haunting is one of the most memorable films I've seen, capturing the terror that Hill House brings to these four people, simply, but quite effectively, using a moving, tense score, and the eerie atmosphere.
The film's brief running time of 112 minutes could have been stretched into 212 minutes, and could have still been satisfactory, explaining more about the birth of Hill House, the hauntings of Hill House, and the future of Hill House.

The 1963 "Haunting" remains one of the eeriest ghost stories ever filmed; though Wise never showed a single spirit, he and his cast created such an overpowering atmosphere of menace the movie is still potent today.
The current "Haunting" comes from director Jan de Bont ("Twister," "Speed"), who is better known as a master of disaster and an orchestrator of special effects than as a craftsman capable of creating a mood piece.
In the 1963 film, Harris' Eleanor was torn between returning the affections of Bloom's Theo, who was openly lesbian, and Johnson's Dr. Markway.

AfterEllen.com - Review of The Haunting
The film received mostly negative critical reviews--largely around the over-use of computer-generated special effects and criticism that the movie just wasn't scary--but did okay at the box office.
The rest of the film shows Theo most frequently running to the rescue of someone--usually Nell, but also some of the male characters--and she ultimately becomes Nell's protector as Nell becomes the target of the ghost's wrath.
Ultimately, however, The Haunting is not a character-driven movie--unless you count the house as a character (which it almost is in this film)--and most of the screen time is taken up by characters reacting to the house's evil acts, not each other, so there isn't enough time to really develop any of the characters fully.

In the 1963 movie, supernatural investigator Dr Markway is researching the existence of ghosts, and visits Hill House, a mansion associated with a history of death and insanity.
The supernatural manifestations are, for the most part, rationally explained away in the 1963 film, however, in the 1999 remake, the obvious and heavy-handed computer-generated effects cannot be so easily dismissed, especially as the film approaches its clumsy and preposterous conclusion.
Va nce is an implausible character whose motives towards the end of the film become far from clear, and Taylor seems to have been as bemused by this as the film's audience would be.

Classic-Horror Review of The Haunting (1963)
As a haunted house film, it starts beautifully--Wise lingers on an eerie fl and white shot of Hill House while narration tells us the creepy backstory, which is chock full of death--suicides, probable murders, early intimations that some spiritual force intertwined with the house itself killed people, etc.
The first two scenes, described in my first two paragraphs, expressed classical horror atmosphere and classical sci-fi brewings in turn -- suggesting a film that would lead to an intriguing mix of the two genres; one that might have resembled "traditional" 1950's sci-fi horror but with Universal eeriness in place of AIP camp.
This is really a film about relationships and the complex triangle (which at various times becomes a weak quadrangle) between Theodora, Eleanor and Dr. Markway.

 Ghosts in the Movies
Topper (1937)—A comedy with decidedly nonthreatening ghosts, this film delighted theater audiences and removed tales of hauntings from the familiar creepy castles and the wild-eyed people with psychotic impulses that had become overly familiar in the horror films of the 1920s and 1930s.
The film is extremely subtle in presenting the spirits, and therein lies much of its power to seize the imagination and to provoke genuine chills.
The Haunting (1963)—This film has become a classic with horror film buffs and serious psychical researchers, both of whom laud director Robert Wise for choosing to use subtlety in the manner in which he presents the ghosts in this adaptation of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House (1959).

 The Haunting (1999)
The Haunting (1963) is one of if not the greatest of all horror films - a haunted house story where all the ghosts exist inside the audience's own head, where nothing is seen, everything entirely suggested.
The middle of the film drags the story to a standstill to introduce a backstory about Hugh Crain having imprisoned children from his mill in the house.
The ending turns into a laughably banal wrapup wherein Eleanor discovers she is (yes!!!) really Hugh's grandchild and becomes the deliverer of the children's ghosts, Hugh's ghost is dragged down to Hell to be judged and Eleanor dies and her spirit is seen going off into a glowing hereafter.

Readers of Jackson's novel confused her title and the title of the 1958 "House on Haunted Hill," so, in an attempt to avoid further mix-up, Jackson's title was shortened simply to "The Haunting" for the 1963 film version.
The film tells the story of several people, two of them psychically "sensitive," assembled in an old New England mansion with a troubled history and an evil reputation.

Certain to remain one of the greatest haunted-house movies ever made, Robert Wise's The Haunting (1963) is antithetical to all the gory horror films of subsequent decades, because its considerable frights remain implicitly rooted in the viewer's sensitivity to abject fear.
The genius of The Haunting lies in the restraint of Wise and screenwriter Nelson Gidding, who elicit almost all of the film's mounting terror from the psychology of its characters--particularly Eleanor, whose grip on sanity grows increasingly tenuous.

A remake of its 1963 predecessor, "The Haunting" is a character-driven, psychologically suspenseful, subconsciously scary film that documents three insomniac patients' experiences in the haunted Hill House as one of them attempts to unveil the macabre secret brooding behind the nightly paranormal activity.
Deeply rooted in the cognitive powers of the subconscious and the imagination, "The Haunting" is a remake of the 1963 film and Shirley Jackson novel that allows one's imagination and primal childhood fears to build the suspense within the film.
Set in New England in contemporary time, the film begins with a quick introduction to the protagonist, Eleanor (Lili Taylor), and her dire situation after her sick mother passes and her relations attempt to strip her from her home and only chance at security.

The Haunting was originally a small budgeted film from 1963 with the same name.
The entire film spends too much time building up its climax and when it's supposed to pay off here and there, it relies too much on convincing the audience that special effects will work better than the story and this is a major miscalculation.
The fate of the characters in the film's last act is the true testament as to just how bad this film is. You can always judge a good or bad film by how much you care about what happens to the major players.

Louis Malle’s bleakest film is this haunting portrait of a wreck of a man quietly counting down his last few hours before his well-planned suicide.
Like any great artist, Malle projects his own traumas into his film, and it is interesting to speculate how much of the director there is in the film's principal character, a disillusioned writer for whom suicide offers the only mechanism for achieving a life with meaning.
The film’s melancholic tone and rigorous lack of sentimentality is beautifully underscored by Erik Satie’s piano music.
