Topic: The Haunting (1999 film)

Scifilm -- Reviews, THE HAUNTING (1999)
What Marrow and his subjects don't know is that Hill House is actually haunted, and the spirits trapped in the house are trying to communicate with one of the test group members.
Haunted House fans will groan at the wink and nudge reference to San Jose, California's haunted tourist attraction The Winchester Mystery House in the small plot point of Hugh Crain's obsessive building of additions into Hill House.
THE HAUNTING was the only film that opened #1 at the 1999 summer box office that did not go on to gross over one hundred million dollars.

THE HAUNTING Movie Review - HauntedHouses.com
A remake of its 1963 predecessor, "The Haunting" is a character-driven, psychologically suspenseful, subconsciously scary film that documents three insomniac patients' experiences in the haunted Hill House as one of them attempts to unveil the macabre secret brooding behind the nightly paranormal activity.
Deeply rooted in the cognitive powers of the subconscious and the imagination, "The Haunting" is a remake of the 1963 film and Shirley Jackson novel that allows one's imagination and primal childhood fears to build the suspense within the film.
Set in New England in contemporary time, the film begins with a quick introduction to the protagonist, Eleanor (Lili Taylor), and her dire situation after her sick mother passes and her relations attempt to strip her from her home and only chance at security.

I also was impressed by the mechanical effects in the film, which obviously required a lot of ingenuity, and some of the CG characters was impressive, especially the ghostly chorus children.
The Haunting is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, and the transfer is outstanding.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX track of The Haunting was considered by many to be a reference soundtrack when it was released on DVD in November of 1999.

 The Haunting (1999)
Loosely based on the Shirley Jackson novel The Haunting of Hill House, and the 1963 film The Haunting, The Haunting is the first memorable haunted house flick since 1979's The Amityville Horror.
The film's trailers appeared to be sporting a psychological, eerie horror flick, but while The Haunting is eerie, special effects are overdone, therefore making it impossible for your imagination to scare you.
The Haunting is suspenseful, as the creaks and cracks in the night are eerie, and the visual effects are amazing, as we see ghosts swim through bed sheets, and a room literally comes alive.

Classic-Horror Review of The Haunting (1999)
The conventional wisdom among the self-appointed horror literati is that compared to the 1963 Robert Wise film of the same name, the 1999 Jan de Bont remake of The Haunting amounts to so much computer effects garbage.
Here’s the obligatory synopsis for anyone not familiar with the Wise film or the overrated Shirley Jackson novel that served as the source material.
The most unusual and persistent myth about the 1999 The Haunting is that everything is overblown and not left to your imagination, and that’s contrasted with the Wise film.

DVD Verdict Review - The Haunting (1999)
DreamWorks' 1999 release of the haunting is a loose adaptation of the 1963 film by the same name.
The film is presented in a 2.35:1 anamorphic aspect ratio and is visually perfect.
The effects are wondrous and I was truly amazed at their quality, and their seamless integration into the film, but at the expense of telling the story, which is never a good thing.

THE COLD SPOT \ Movies \ The Haunting (1963)
Robert Wise's film is a remarkable achievement--subtle, artistic, and terrifying, this film has never quite been matched.
The film's premise is different from the remake, it is rather about approaching the supernatural, giving it a method, trying to tie it to science, trying to remove it from the realm of superstition and letting it be dealt with in a scientific way.
The film works perfectly in its cast and dialogue, and although there are (almost) no visible effects, the terror becomes real, the house comes to life.

Nothing like this was in the 1963 film (with the possible exception of the score for Eleanor's introduction), and I don't remember a carnival being in the book, either.
If the film is half as good as the music that accompanies it, it will be fantastic.

UGO.com Film/TV - The Haunting - Twice Scared: UGO's Guide to Horror Remakes
Robert Wise's The Haunting, based on Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, is certainly one of the best ghost stories on film.
Wise's film succeeds because of the story's basic truth - that obsession with the dead will lead to death, both physically and spiritually - and because of a great cast of actors.
The plot, which is largely repeated in the 1999 remake, is relatively simple.

By the year 1999, these effects just weren't enough to carry a movie anymore, and a special effects-weary audience isn't going to "drop their popcorn" over them now.
The main problem with this film is that it relied too much on special effects, and not enough on the subtlety which made the original so great.
The first film from the 1960's is one of the best ghost stories ever put on celluloid and is about 90% true to the original story, which is why it was so good.

BBC - Films - review - The Haunting
Under the pretence of conducting a study of insomnia, Dr Marrow (Neeson) invites three victims to spend a few nights at the decidedly sinister Hill House.
This remake is nowhere near as terrifying as the 1963 original, but then that was hardly a good example of a coherent film.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews: The Haunting (1999)
As is typical of a Jan de Bont movie, The Haunting looks great while you're watching it, but the second the credits roll, it starts to fall apart.
For the most part, the characters are defined only as far as they need to to serve the plot -- it's hard to imagine any of them have a life outside the movie -- and the few times extra character attributes are introduced, they come off extraneous and irrelevant.
The mansion in which the film is set is a character all its own, and it's a fascinating, dazzling character.

 The Haunting (1999)
The Haunting (1963) is one of if not the greatest of all horror films - a haunted house story where all the ghosts exist inside the audience's own head, where nothing is seen, everything entirely suggested.
The middle of the film drags the story to a standstill to introduce a backstory about Hugh Crain having imprisoned children from his mill in the house.
The ending turns into a laughably banal wrapup wherein Eleanor discovers she is (yes!!!) really Hugh's grandchild and becomes the deliverer of the children's ghosts, Hugh's ghost is dragged down to Hell to be judged and Eleanor dies and her spirit is seen going off into a glowing hereafter.

from L.A. The Haunting is a film that boasts a really creepy house, good effects work and sound work, a cast that seems to believe that everything around them is real and that house.
There are genuinely creepy moments in the film and I liked the way the ghosts manifested themselves in sheets, curtains and the house itself.

"The Haunting" is one of the lamest attempts at creating a horror story I've ever seen, but in terms of funhouse style and visual effects, Jan de Bont has created a haunted house with style, elegance, and even some terror.
The central story centers around a psychiatrist, Dr. David Marrow (Liam Neeson), inviting three unsuspecting strangers to a haunted house under the guise that they are participating in an experiment on insomnia.
It seems to be so confused about its own sequences of events that, when there comes a time for the movie to conclude, it decides to throw something else in for the sake of it being there, whether it works with the story or not.
