"The Sin of the Bishop of Modenstein" by Anthony Hope
Princess Osra's face was now very pale, but her voice did not tremble and she did not flinch; for the honor of her House and of the throne was as sacred to her as her salvation, and more than her happiness.

In 1895 Mr Hawkins published Count Antonio, and contributed to Dialogues of the Day, edited by Mr Oswald Crawfurd.
Comedies of Courtship and The Heart of the Princess Osra followed in 1896; Phroso in 1897; Simon Dale and Rupert of Hentzau (sequel of the Prisoner of Zenda) 1898; and The King's Mirror, a Ruritanian romance with an infusion of serious psychological interest, 1899.
The author was advancing from his light comedy and gallant romantic inventions to the graver kind of fiction of which The God in the Car had been an earlier essay.

"The Heart of Princess Osra" is a collection of nine short stories or adventures set in the early 1700's.
Though courting and marriage between courts are matters of empires and of ambassadors, Princess Osra is too proud and too beautiful to be the pawn of an arranged agreement between kingdoms.
Though her father, King Henry, and later her brother, King Rudolf, go to great lengths to find a worthy suitor, it seems that no one can catch and hold the fancy of Princess Osra.

One of my favourite all-but-unknown books is The Heart Of Princess Osra, written by Anthony Hope in 1896.
Hope hit the big time with The Prisoner Of Zenda and its boffo sequel Rupert Of Hentzau, two rip-roaring yarns in which an English dilettante twice contrives to save from usurpers the throne of Ruritania.
The Heart Of Princess Osra is also set in Hope's fictional Mitteleuropean kingdom, but this time a century and a half earlier -- the 1730s -- and it's not a rollicking adventure but a series of ill-starred romantic vignettes featuring King Rudolf III's younger sister and various unsuitable suitors.

While practicing law, Hope also experimented with creative writing, and he published his first novel, a political satire entitled A Man of Mark, at his own expense in 1890.
With the publication of his most famous novel, The Prisoner of Zenda, in 1894, Hope abandoned his legal career to write full-time, penning the short story collection, The Heart of Princess Osra (1896), and the Zenda sequel, Rupert of Hentzau (1898).
Throughout his productive life, Hope published a wide variety of fiction, in areas ranging from the light domestic comedy of The Dolly Dialogues (1894) to the more serious fiction of Simon Dole (1889).
