The High and the Mighty (1954) - A Review by David Nusair
And though The High and the Mighty is generally credited as setting the template for the modern disaster movie (ie lots of familiar faces trapped in a dangerous situation), the film doesn't really succeed on that level simply because it's just not exciting enough.
The High and the Mighty is ostensibly a disaster movie, but given that the film spends the majority of its time delving into the personal lives of its characters, it would be far more accurate to refer to this as a typically overblown, Hollywood-style melodrama.
It certainly doesn't help that the film features many, many sequences in which the characters discuss their personal lives with one another, something that generally serves only to pad out the running time (and is exacerbated by the countless flashbacks and pointless anecdotes).

DVDFILE.COM: The High and the Mighty Review
The release of The High and the Mighty on DVD isn't the kind of event that ushers in a bona fide classic to the realm of home entertainment, but it finally brings the prospect of checking out one of John Wayne's most beloved and hard-to-find pictures as it was meant to be seen.
The film's flashback-within-flashback scenario lends the picture a bit too much clunky exposition (that's a big problem), but the fighting sequences and aerial photography are excellent (that's not a problem at all).
Formally, The High and the Mighty is a perfect yin to the yang of Wayne's The Alamo.

The High and the Mighty (1954) - Movie Review
Wayne's part is established early in the film which then goes on to introduce most of the passengers as they arrive for the flight.
This film was Wayne's first venture into CinemaScope, a process that tended to make the audience feel drawn into the setting in its novelty days while dissipating the sense of confinement.
But the way films about ailing aircraft strike a ready chord of fearful identification in audiences ensures that The High and the Mighty exerts a grip, and its great commercial success must have been encouraging to Wayne in his early days as a busy actor-producer.

The plot of THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY allows the individual stories of the diverse group of passengers on a transpacific flight to unfold to varying degrees, right up until the point when disaster strikes- with one of the airplane’s engines catching fire shortly after the plane’s fuel supply reaches the point of no return.
John Wayne stars in THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY as Dan Roman, the old warhorse copilot, who returns to flying after a previous airline tragedy, which robbed him of his wife and child, and finds himself in the position of taking command, when pilot John Sullivan (Robert Stack) starts to crack under the pressure.

William A. Wellman's The High and the Mighty (1954) might very well be called the 'Grand Hotel' of the wild blue yonder.
Throughout, flesh tones are not very accurate at all (an inherent flaw of all Warner-Color film stock of the period); they're either excessively pink or a flat orange.
But it does not come anywhere near to the level of quality one would expect from a disc advertised as 'restored and remastered.' The audio is a 5.1 attempt at recapturing the original six track stereo, but it's generally strident and not very natural sounding at all.

Hers was the toughest acting job because she appeared in nearly every one of the film's 700 scenes.
She vented her rage about the trials of film acting in letters she wrote to her mother, Gertrude; tearful, long-distance telephone calls to Olivier who, after Wuthering Heights, moved to New York to appear on Broadway; and to her co-stars.

The films were made by Batjac, the company founded by the actor and run by his heirs.
But somewhere along the way this wonderful film got "kidnapped" into "movie limbo" and has drifted there ever since, mired in all manner of obtuse legalities and, ultimately, a seeming intention on the part of the late Michael Wayne to "hold it back" from general release to the public "until the time is right".

The Reel Deal | Movie Reviews by Mark Sells
From the makers of "Waiting for Guffman" and "Best in Show" comes "A Mighty Wind," a film that rekindles the spirit of the '60s folk rock boom and details the rise and fall of three noteworthy groups and their attempts to reunite years later for one, final memorial concert.
The film opens with the passing of folk icon, Irving Steinbloom, manager of such acts as "The Folksmen," "The Main Street Singers," and "Mitch and Mickey." In honor of his death, Steinbloom's son Jonathan decides that the only fitting tribute is to host a memorial concert.
The downside of this film is that unlike Guest's previous work "Best in Show," the film evolves from being a character comedy, with improvisational routines and skits, into one that is more melodramatic.

Foster on Film - Review: The High and the Mighty
In this deeply deeply serious disaster film, a plane-full of eccentrics (Jan Sterling, Sidney Blackmer, David Brian, Claire Trevor) make excessively long speeches, sometimes accompanied by flashbacks, detailing far more of their personal lives than other passengers or the audience want to hear.
They must have perceived The High and the Mighty as a joke and trusted that no one would see them laughing in the back row.
The High and the Mighty may be the earliest of the "Grand Hotel" disaster films, where multiple intertwined plot-threads focus on the soap opera problems of thinly disguised stereotypes played by actors on the down-slope of their careers.

THE MIGHTY movie review (with photos and clips where possible)
The Mighty is a rousing, heartfelt adventure in which two young outcasts become special friends.
Directed with sensitivity and wit by Peter Chelsom, the film is adapted from Freak the Mighty, a popular young-adult novel by Rodman Philbrick.
At first glance, The Mighty closely echoes the season's earlier film Simon Birch, another commendable tale of a tiny, disabled boy who is befriended by a fellow outcast.

In fact, the film would have benefitted more had Chelsom and company gone strongly in one direction or the other with such material.
Beyond the film's overall flat execution and obvious manipulative efforts, it does contain one of the more glaring, and major continuity errors that I've seen in years.
Although it's not extremely melodramatic and there are plenty of movies that blow past this one on the manipulation scale, the film never really did anything for me. Perhaps it was just the day, or having just seen the similarly based "Simon Birch," but I found the film about as lackadaisical as they come.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Biography - AOL Music
A great deal of the groundwork for the mid- to late-'90s explosion of ska and ska-metal was laid by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, who were one of the first bands to cross high-energy ska with hardcore punk and heavy metal and who also helped shift its tone toward testosterone-filled party music.
Originally calling themselves simply the Bosstones, the group appended "Mighty Mighty" to their name after discovering a Boston-area a cappella group with an identical moniker.
A year later, the Bosstones appeared in the film Clueless, performing "Where'd You Go" and "Someday I Suppose," two of their most popular numbers; they also landed a main-stage slot on that summer's Lollapalooza tour.
