For the first few minutes of the film people are picking up this hitch - hiker, who we soon learn is a man by the name of Myers, and wind up dead for their troubles.
She felt this way because of the cheap film stock on which it was released and because of the poor box office receipts.
Strong performances by O'Brien, Lovejoy, and Talman make this movie incredibly enjoyable and will please anyone who is a fan of the film noir genre.

 Road Movie
Through these comprehensive and absorbing studies a clear and concise post-modern picture of the road movie emerges, tracing hitherto neglected intersections with other genres such as the western, film noir, horror and even science fiction.
From "The Wizard of Oz" to "Crash", "Apocalypse Now" to "Vanishing Point", "The Wild Bunch" to "Easy Rider", Jacks Sargeant's Lost Highways is the definitive illustrated guide to a diverse body of film which holds at its nucleus the quintessential cinematic/ cultural interchange of modern times.
The road movie: a complex cinematic journey that incorporates mythic themes of questing and searching, the need for being, for love, for a home and for a promise of a different future, and yet also serves as a map of current cultural desires, dreams, and fears.

 The Hitch-hiker (DVD) : Collectables Records (Oldies.com)
Frank Lovejoy and Edmund O'Brien are in fine form as a pair of pals on a fishing trip who confirm the statement that "no good deed goes unpunished" when they pick up hitchhiker William Talmann, who is positively creepy in the role of Psycho Killer.
A very fine example of film noir and a talented actor/director (and I do mean Lupino).

Bright Lights Film Journal Ida Lupino: The Hitch-hiker
The Hitch-hiker (1953) recently received a screening as part of a season of Lupino’s work at London’s National Film Theatre.
What remains exciting is how her films seemed to embody the music of chance, circumstance, and creativity that Bazin dubbed "the genius of the system." The evidence of her peers and the evidence on screen bear out what was rash about high auteurism, for here was a vision shaped in the crucible of history.
If Mexico is traditionally regarded in Hollywood films as the wilderness beyond the suburbs, liminal space to which Americans go to resolve personal conflicts, think, or get stinko, here the country comes into its own.

Ida Lupino's The Hitch-Hiker (1953) has been called the only true noir directed by a woman, but those who make that claim probably also mean to include the provision "during the classic noir period." Regardless, the heroine of American independent cinema proclaimed it her best film and few would argue.
Alfred Hitchcock was not a straight-up noir director, but it'd be a shame not to explore the overlap between the genre-slash-style and his work, particularly in the 40s and 50s.
Those are films that set the era's artistic agenda for cinematic crime - the "B" pictures from the majors, and the stuff from Monogram and PRC and Eagle-Lion studios, mainly copied what the "A" films did successfully.

The Resurrection of Ida Lupino - Susan Fegley Osmond
Finally, last fall Kino on Video released three films Lupino directed under her own independent production company: Not Wanted (1949), The Bigamist (1953), and the movie Lupino felt was her best cinematic directorial effort, The Hitch-Hiker (1953).
Lupino was America's most prolific woman director of films and television, a screenwriter and occasional film producer, a composer whose music was performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and an actress whose career (in theater, film, radio, and TV) spanned nearly fifty years.
Lupino was born in London on February 4, 1918, the twelfth generation of an unbroken line of entertainers that stretched back to the early seventeenth century.
