The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a science fiction comedy series created by Douglas Adams (1952–2001) that debuted as a radio comedy broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1978.
A Hollywood-funded film version, produced and filmed in the UK, was released in April 2005, and adaptations of the last three books to radio were broadcast from 2004 to 2005.
In The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (published in 1979), the characters visit the legendary planet Magrathea, home to the now-collapsed planet building industry, and meet Slartibartfast, a planetary coastline designer who was responsible for the fjords of Norway.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is described in the official book on the making of the film, the DVD commentary, as well as the film tie-in edition of the original novel (which contains an interview with Zooey Deschanel in which she describes this aspect of her character).
The entry in the Guide about the Babel fish is shortened in the film, to exclude the proof of the non-existence of God found in previous versions.
The film shortens this to "counterpoint the underlying metaphor of the Vogonity of the poet's soul."

Short film review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
This review is based on a substantially complete version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy shown to a small group of journalists in London on 31st March 2005, to which I was invited by Buena Vista International and Digital Outlook.
Hitchhiker’s Guide has always been a Swift-ian satire but the makers of the movie have decided to ditch all that and replace it with pointless surrealism and crude physical comedy.
It’s not even a good film if viewed as an original work: the characters are unsympathetic, the cast exhibit no chemistry, the direction is pedestrian, the pace plodding, the special effects overpowering (lots and lots of special effects, none of them funny mind you) and above all the script is amazingly, mindbogglingly awful.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Film | Review: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Don't panic - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is not as bad as I had feared.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy centres on the hapless Arthur Dent, who awakes one morning to find his best friend is an alien, his planet is about to be destroyed and that he is somehow central to a galactic scientific experiment to determine the meaning of life itself.
Hitchhiker fans will know what is happening, but newcomers will be left scratching their heads at a story that flits from one unpronounceable planet to another - each one populated by equally exotic-sounding characters.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie review, In Film Australia
The establishing minutes of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy utilize its smartest juxtaposition, a shrewd literal simile: Arthur Dent's (Martin Freeman) cosy little house is scheduled to be demolished in order to make way for a new freeway bypass, moments before the Earth itself is demolished for a similar, albeit more intergalactic purpose.
The best moments in this film, much like the BBC mini series, are the voice over bits in which the fruity narrator (Stephen Fry) rattles off an endless supply of superfluous information, including the gory history of Vogan poetry and the effect that a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster has on the brain.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is an always digestible and meekly enjoyable popcorn movie that survives entirely off the strength of its source material.

I'm not really a fan of film reviewers as their job involves pretending that there is an objective standard that governs how much everyone will enjoy a film (well, some of them are smart enough not to dress their opinion as anything else).
Everyone enjoys films in different ways and I like to use my own judgment to decide if a film is worth my time or not (well, that and the opinions of a few trusted individuals who's taste in films is very similar to my own).
It is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reborn with a new energy.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy :: Film Review :: ABC Wide Bay Qld
Surprisingly, Douglas Adams’ immortal tale of a man, his dressing gown and his friend from a small planet in the vicinity of Beetelgeuse, has survived its many formats unscathed, and is as funny and insightful now as it was in the 1970s.
It’s a common complaint that film versions of existing material become style over substance — as though a big budget, glamourous stars and high technology somehow can’t capture the essential magic as well as a tatty but lovingly made TV show.
A film is a different animal, however, and the major difference is that there’s more of a coherent plot to this version than Hitchhikers has previously exhibited, and some characters, like Trillian, are more developed which others have disappeared.

I'll admit, it was a good film, I didn't regret watching it (I didn't go to the cinema to do so), but it wasn't nearly as good as the radio show, the tv show or the books.
