Topic: The Hobbit (1977 film)

The Hobbit (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The film was produced and directed by Arthur Rankin Jr.
The film was first broadcast on NBC in the United States, on November 27th, 1977, and was tailored to children: the story was done in a very light-hearted style, and featured a lot of songs (some of which came from the book).
While the film is quite faithful to the story, it is at its core still a child-oriented musical adaptation, and therefore not a perfect adaptation of Tolkien's novel.

The New York Review of Books: The Hobbit Habit
In truth, the hobbits, Bilbo, Frodo, and their playmates, are not altogether equal to the suddenly enlarged stage onto which they have been thrust.
In the various wars preceding and accompanying this action, the hobbits are dauntless enough, and occasions are provided for them to appear modestly useful; but essentially their roles are the subordinate ones assigned in traditional adventure stories to high-spirited and venturesome boys.
The hobbits are useful here in giving human dimensions and sensations to the story; they relish the landscapes and the homely physical pleasures to be found amid them.

Later, a trilogy of films was directed by Peter Jackson and released to cinemas from 2001 to 2003, achieving critical acclaim from global audiences and 17 Oscars.
The film was part one of what was originally to be a two-part adaptation of Tolkien's story, Part I ending after the battle of Helm's Deep, but before Sam, Frodo and Gollum traverse the Dead Marshes, and Part II picking up from where the first film left off.
Peter Jackson's film adaptations garnered seventeen Oscars (four for The Fellowship of the Ring, two for The Two Towers, and eleven for The Return of the King); these cover many of the awards categories (in fact, The Return of the King won all of the eleven awards for which it was nominated, including Best Picture).

The film was made by Jules/Julie Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr, who had made a number of other animated and stop-motion animated works for children.
Perhaps this was a desire to not make a film that was designed for a children's audience too violent - although the later Battle of the Five Armies is contrarily directed with quite a degree of violent turbulence.
Certainly the film does pick up when it comes to the scenes where Bilbo confronts Gollum and they engage in the game of riddles and when Bilbo invisibly enters Smaug's lair, which are all conducted with a sufficient degree of drama.
