Holiday joined Count Basie in 1937 and Artie Shaw in 1938, becoming one of the first fl singers to be featured with a white orchestra.
Holiday is often considered the foremost female singer in jazz history, a view substantiated by her influence on later singers.
More than nearly any other singer, Holiday phrased her performances in the manner of a jazz instrumental soloist, and accordingly she has to be seen as a complete jazz musician and not merely a singer.

Thoughts on the holiday and new year movie season | Samizdata.net
This is because most nominated films have been in release for really quite a while by the time of the awards, and have just about worn out their welcome in most cinemas.
The third film was therefore delayed six months and a new director (Alfonso Cuaron, the Mexican director best known for Y tu mamá también (2001), but who got the gig probably as much for his superb but little seen adaptation of the children's bookA Little Princess (1995)) was drafted for the third film.
The film was reasonably faithful to the source material for much of the movie, but (as with most Dick adaptations) had a silly ending in which lots of things got blown up.

Holiday film haul - Entertainment   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Based on actual events from Sheridan's own life, the film tells the story of Johnny (Paddy Considine) and Sarah (Samantha Morton), and their two adorable young daughters (played by real-life sisters Sarah and Emma Bolger) who have moved into a Manhattan tenement apartment in the sweltering heat of the summer with no air conditioning.
And the older sister, played by Sarah Bolger, shows a maturity way beyond her years in a few select monologues; the film is really shown through her eyes (or her camcorder, for that matter), exuding a kind of innocent magic.
At the end of this film, the characters have come such a long way that we embrace their pitfalls and celebrations.

A bizarrely early entry into the 2004 holiday film marathon, “Surviving Christmas” is a terrific way to start thinking about the holiday mood, and you get some big laughs in the process.
After an offer of $250,000 is made, the Valcos immediately agree to act as Drew’s family for the holidays, which tests their patience, sanity, and yuletide cheer as they watch Drew act out his every holiday whim.
This being a holiday-themed film as well as a major studio production, “Christmas” eventually heads down a road of syrupy, warm-hearted scripting, laboriously meant to hug the audience when the film has been so insistent on tickling up until this point.

 Film Review: Last Holiday
Apparently, in today's political climate of paranoia, apathy and corruption, people just want happy endings and feelgood films, which is an insufficient excuse to turn a much-loved Ealing tragicomedy into a bloated Hollywood rom-com, touting the vacuous All-American message of Be All You Can Be, until all you want to be is deaf and blind.
Several contrived and irritating subplots later, everything is neatly tied up with valuable lessons learned all round, and it is finally time to go home and have a stiff drink whilst attempting to forget the whole degrading experience.
Although I was fortunate enough to miss the first 10 minutes, Last Holiday remains lumbering, lacklustre, and painful to endure.

Holiday film classics' value lies in eye of beholder 12/07/01   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The short answer is that a holiday classic is some little piece of celluloid we experience and enjoy every year -- by ourselves or with family -- and without which our holiday would feel incomplete.
It is not that it is not a great film, but it was greatly under-appreciated when it first came out, and only in vast viewership and mass cultural rethink did it gain its status as a classic.
Ezell reminds that when most of these films now acclaimed as "holiday classics" were gaining their legs when we had such a thing as "national TV events." In the days when network television was the only game in town, the annual airing of these classics was a shared national experience.

Holiday Inn is indeed one of those films that highlights the season and the seasons after.
Yes, the film appears somewhat outdated and politically incorrect (the scene with Crosby and one of his female cohorts singing and dancing with fl painted faces) and campy at times, but at the time, it was all fun.
At the time the film was made, there was a need to provide moviegoers the opportunity to forget their worries and come to 'Holiday Inn.' So, I recommend this classic musical for its simplicity and musical numbers.

Roman Holiday (1953) is a delightful, captivating fairy-tale romance shot entirely on location in Rome, and produced and directed by one of Hollywood's most skillful, distinguished, professional and eminent directors - William Wyler.

Irving Berlin's songs are always a joy to listen to, and while none of the stars sparkle as they could do there is gentle warmth to it and an element of romance, which brings out the Christmas spirit.

Bing Crosby, allegedly the biggest selling recording artist in the world at the time, is on spectacular form, crooning his way through classics like White Christmas and Easter Parade, while Fred Astaire tap-tap-taps his path through some brilliantly memorable dance routines.
Bing's version of White Christmas - better known, perhaps, from the later film, Blue Skies, also starring Fred Astaire, where Bing sings it to the US troops - is really a must-see for anyone in the run-up to Christmas holidays.
With snow falling outside, as a woolly-jumpered Bing draws up to the fire with his pipe and begins to serenade Linda with his silky message of seasonal goodwill, it would melt all but the biggest of Scrooges' hearts.

This doesn’t sit well with the Kranks’ holiday obsessed neighborhood (led by a wasted Dan Aykroyd), which tries to terrorize the Kranks into celebrating the holiday.
Forgetting that he’s been unwilling to plant any seed of sympathy or believability in his film up to this point, Roth plunges ahead with a small final act turn, which has the Kranks embracing the holiday spirit, bestowing a rather large gift on their “kinda” enemy neighbors.
“Christmas with the Kranks” would make a terrific double bill with last year’s “Bad Santa.” While the latter film purposefully tried to destroy the holiday spirit with caustic material and performances, “Kranks” manages to cover the same terrain, all the while believing itself to be the quintessential holiday film.

Butler, his obsession for Rossum turning murderous at random, bites into his crazed caped crusader role without enough indication that a guy who hangs around a theater wearing a nifty mask (how does that stay on, by the way?) might be a flamboyant fellow.
