The Honourable Schoolboy lived up to my expectations, yet in some ways it disappointed me. The plot is complex enough to keep the reader thoroughly engaged, yet not get lost in Byzantine characterizations.
Yet, "The Honourable Schoolboy" is not JUST a psychological study, it is also a wonderful and expansive yarn - a tale told by one of the most accomplished storytellers ever.
With Westerby, the `honourable school boy' of the title, we embark on a cautious yet beautifully choreographed adventure into the heart of darkness of ourselves, and we shouldn't be surprised to find some scar tissue and broken bones as we descend deeper into the tortuous caverns we keep hidden in our subconscious realms.

The Honourable Schoolboy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Honourable Schoolboy, published in 1977, is the second novel of the Karla Trilogy, written by spy author John Le Carré.
Although George Smiley has a major role, the eponymous protagonist is the Honourable Jerry Westerby, Esq., a newspaper reporter, and some-time British spy, who was a minor character in the novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and was played by Joss Ackland, in the 1979 BBC television adaptation.
In a foreword to a later edition of The Honourable Schoolboy, John Le Carré stated that the story might have worked better had George Smiley been omitted, since, he felt, Smiley's appearances in the novel detracted from the protagonist, the Honourable Jerry Westerby, Esq.

The agent is Jerry Westerby, son of a press baron (hence the Honourable of the title), and the novel is divided about half and half between Smiley's activities in London and Westerby's in Hong Kong and Indochina.
The Honourable Schoolboy is not as good as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; the excitement is less.
Smiley on the trail of the mole is much more interesting than Smiley trying to restore the reputation of the Circus, and the novel is therefore less involving.

John le Carré - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His first two novels, A Call for the Dead and A Murder of Quality, closely follow the mystery fiction approach, where the emphasis is on a complex riddle that hero George Smiley must solve.
In later, longer works, such as The Honourable Schoolboy and The Night Manager, le Carré approaches his material more as novelist and less as a mystery writer, focussing on the in-depth development of his characters.
The middle novel, The Honourable Schoolboy, was never adapted for film or television.

It is not the English habit, as a rule, to accord distinction to journalists, says a woman in John Le Carre's novel The Honourable Schoolboy.
When Jerry Westerby, the reporter who is the novel's "schoolboy" hero, mentions the London newspaper he writes for, he always calls it "the comic."
From the moment it was launched in October 1986, The Independent served notice that English habits were about to change.

At least you won’t make the stupid mistake I did when I jumped straight to Smiley’s People after TTSS because I was unaware The Honorable Schoolboy formed part of a trilogy.
There is no heroism, only ever-deepening levels of villainy; and even when you think you’ve “won” all you’ve done is sunk further into the quagmire.
Nothing hammers this point home with greater force than the final chapters of The Honorable Schoolboy which are, quite frankly, harrowing.

Smiley, who read his Schiller, might have noted the impossibility of being both naïve and sentimental, but his creator appeared blind to any inconsistency.
Unlike Graham Greene, who hated and feared love because it was so inextricably bound up with pity, Le Carré locates his characters’ humanity in their capacity to love the most unexpected of objects, such as dishonest fathers, unfaithful wives, fat schoolboys, mongrel dogs, prostitutes, librarians, terrorists.
A kind of love binds even Smiley and Karla, long-term Cold War opponents, just as a despairing attachment draws one to his unfaithful wife and the other to his delinquent daughter.

This is not the case with Le Carre, who deftly uses the Honourable Schoolboy to set us up for the conclusion of Smiley's People.
There is no neat linear progression of plot from Tinker Tailor to the denouement, the apprehension of Karla and the triumph, however muted or understated, of George Smiley, but a finely-varied panorama of character, setting, and action, well-paced and well-presented.
