pumpkinhead reviews: hound of the baskervilles
The Hound of the Baskervilles is the story of the haunting of the old Yorkshire family of Baskerville by a mythic hound and of the detective Sherlock Holmes' investigation into the matter.
The criminal, hearing of the legend, had taken advantage of the old Charles Baskerville's superstition and weak heart and faked up a large, material hound to resemble the ghost of the legend; Charles Baskerville died from a heart attack brought on by the sight of the hound.
None of this occurs in Hound, and it is only at the very end of the novel that we get any idea as to who the criminal is, or for that matter as to the motivations behind the criminal's actions.

Before Sir Henry Baskerville (Richard Greene) arrives in London to claim his inheritance, Mortimer enlists the aid of Sherlock Holmes (Rathbone) lest yet another Baskerville succumb to the horror stalking the desolate ancestral moors.
Baskerville learns that along with the grand family mansion comes the too-real legend of a phantom killer canine, a secretive butler (John Carradine, one year before his Casy in The Grapes of Wrath), and colorful neighbors such as the boyishly affable Dr. Stapleton (Morton Lowry), who collects ancient skulls from the Neolithic ruins nearby, Mrs.
So sure-footed is this Hound's casting, another version wasn't attempted until England's Hammer Films gave it a garishly entertaining turn twenty years later, and Rathbone's only serious competition for the definitive screen Sherlock wouldn't arrive for almost fifty years with Jeremy Brett.
