Review: The House of the Spirits
The House of the Spirits is driven by its complex and many-faceted plot, not by the characters that populate the film.
However, in the case of The House of the Spirits, which is a worthy effort as it stands, certain alterations (not all of which would have been simple to execute) might have transformed this into a devastating film.
The House of the Spirits spans six decades, beginning in South America in 1926 and ending in the same country during the early 1970s.

:: rogerebert.com :: The House of the Spirits
The story told in "The House of the Spirits" is a lusty, passionate Latin melodrama, filled with ghosts, magic, poison and romance.
"The House of the Spirits" seems like a road production - like a French "Guys and Dolls," an Italian "Three Sisters," a British "Streetcar Named Desire." All of the characters have the right names, all of the necessary events occur, and indeed the very best local actors have been engaged.

The House of the Spirits VHS
The House of the Spirits is a generational tale of life among the ruling class in a South American country, as adapted from the Isabel Allende novel, but the political realities coexist very uneasily with the magical realism in this Bille August film.
I have not seen a film quite as appaling as this one in a long time, I am Chilean and a huge fan of the book "La casa de los espiritos" (The house of the spirits), which is beautifly written, with some of the most truthfull and thoughtfull characters I have come across.
Ponderous, pandering and dull, THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS wastes an amazing cast of great actors on what can only be called a bad couple of hours.

He returned to Clara, who had not spoken for many years, preferring to live in the 'house of the spirits' inside her head.
Director August has an eye for epic size - the film takes places in opulent cafes, plush houses, big crowds - all designed for maximum widescreen impact.
And indeed the book would have been better suited as a tv mini-series than as this rather ungainly film.

 House On Haunted Hill (1999)
House On Haunted Hill (1999) is a good example of how modern filmmakers have in general forgotten how to make films and think that a bunch of cool effects will hide the obvious flaws like lack of a creditable plot, mediocre acting and so on.
This is a fairly dynamic soundtrack as you would expect of a film set in a haunted house, with a wide variety in the levels of dialogue and sound effects as a result of reactions to various situations.
The original House On Haunted Hill was not one of the greatest films of the horror genre, but this remake barely lives up to the genre name at all.
