The Hunchback of Notre Dame - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (in French, Notre-Dame de Paris) is a novel first published in 1831 by the prolific French author Victor Hugo.
Many film adaptations of the novel have simplified the thematic and historical concerns greatly, leading to the most important theme being the mistreatment of Quasimodo for his ugliness, and the moral that one shouldn't judge people by their looks.
The author felt the primary character was the Notre Dame de Paris itself, the Cathedral.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (in French, ''Notre-Dame de Paris'') was a novel first published in 1831 by the French literary giant Victor Hugo.
More recently, ''The Bellringer of Notre Dame'' (as it has been renamed) has been scheduled for a live action TV film on ABC's ''The Wonderful World of Disney'', as well as a possible American theatrical production, like Disney's other successful musical adaptations of their films now playing on Broadway.

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME II - DVD
Although the animation is sloppy and the music is, to say the least, uninspiring, Disney's direct-to-video sequel to 1996's underestimated and genuinely disturbing The Hunchback of Notre Dame is bolstered by an astonishing voice cast (excepting Jennifer Love Hewitt), an interesting racial tension, and a storyline that I haven't encountered since Pete's Dragon.
The songs of The Hunchback of Notre Dame II are generally awful, indicated as they are by atonal melodies and lyrical gaffes like, "There's no one I'd rather pick, we're closer than frack and frick." Not only impossible to sing along to, the soundtrack is barely identifiable as music.
Quasi's pathetic whittling of little wood fetishes survives intact from the first film (as does his uncanny resemblance to Marty Feldman's Igor from Young Frankenstein), but what is irredeemably lost is the consistent darkness of tone, the thinly disguised sexuality, and the unusual resolve towards the bittersweet of the original.

The color pallette is darker than most Disney animated films; the shadowed scenery on display beautifully renders the classical Paris setting and one can feel the antiquity of the cathedral.
While the animation is not as vibrant as say Tarzan or Aladdin, there is wonderful artwork on display, from the colorful parade to the stained-glass windows within Notre Dame.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: The Hunchback of Notre Dame | Deseret Morning News Web edition
To be honest, the idea of a warm-and-fuzzy animated adaptation of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," complete with plush-toy merchandising, did not appeal to me when it was announced a couple of years ago.
In "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," a disturbing and thoughtful morality tale has been lightened up, and its denouement significantly altered (as if you thought Disney would leave that alone).
On the other hand, Hugo's darkest themes, and that famous ending, have never been faithfully filmed in any of the seven or eight celluloid adaptations — including the two that are most famous, Lon Chaney's horror version (1923) and Charles Laughton's overly sentimental one (1939).

This self-censorship robs the work of one of its strongest tensions: the monstrosity of Frollo results in effect from the repression caused by the enforced obligation of continence and celibacy imposed on clergy by the Catholic church.
The makers of the animated feature have clung faithfully to the Dieterle film in which the respect for him whom the media still often call "The Holy Father" leads to crowning Quasimodo not (as in Hugo) the "Pope of Fools" but rather the "King of Fools".

Either Disney just wanted to cash in on the release of the crappy direct-to-video sequel (and are holding back the special features for the two-disc edition that the film deserves) or they simply don't care about what is one of their most daring and mature animated films.
Hunchback tells the classic story of Quasimodo; the lonely bell ringer of Notre Dame and delivers a classic message in a daring and mature way that you wouldn't expect from Disney.
The film is a beautiful work of art to look at with some scenes that you just want to pull off the screen and have framed on your wall.

This was because they rejected the term "hunchback" --in the 1990s' politically correct society, they prefer themselves to be referred to as "differently abled." I wonder what Hugo would have thought of all of this...

In more recent years Walt Disney has monopolised the story with their 1996 animated version, with the voices of Tom Hulce, Demi Moore and Kevin Kline, which was rapidly ranked as one of the classic Disney animated films.
Alan Menken’s music for The Hunchback of Notre Dame is perhaps unusual for a Disney animation, the music is generally spectacular and very serious and a departure from his scores for the likes of Aladdin and The Little Mermaid.
