Our president, a man who did not win the popular vote, squeaking out an Electoral College victory in an honest 50/50 popular vote, has since acted as if he received a mandate from all Americans to transform the country to the right.

Although The Hunting of the President is unquestionably pro-Bill Clinton, it's not an attempt to exonerate the former president.
But The Hunting of the President offers a lesson for both parties about what can happen when powerful forces unite to bring down a politician.
In echoing previous claims of a "vast right-wing conspiracy," the film suggests that the hatred of Clinton was fed by a Washington elite who saw him as a White-trash interloper.

Based on Joe Conason and Gene Lyons' book, The Hunting of the President: The Ten-Year Campaign to Destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton, this documentary avers that a right-wing cabal effectively attempted to force Clinton out of office in the 90s by manipulating the media and legal process of the U.S to their own ends.
'The Hunting of the President' obviously depicts Clinton in a favourable light, as the wronged victim of a MaCarthyist witch hunt.
That's not to say that 'The Hunting of the President' is perfect; it uses the contemporary technique of combining melodramatic music and stock footage to illustrate key points in the narrative, which I think lessens the integrity of the material and distracts from the very compelling hard facts it contains.

"Hunting" ridicules the media's self-fulfilling frenzy for scoop, but it taps the deepest notes of absurdity in its interviews with Claudia Riley, the witty, august 74-year-old widow of former Arkansas governor and Clinton mentor Bob Riley.
Her expression of Kafkaesque weariness as she recalls Starr's men asking her if she'd ever had sex with the president is priceless and exactly where documentary film improves on the printed page.

The Hunting of the President (2004)
Co-directed by longtime "FOB" (Friend of Bill) television producer Harry Thomason, this adaptation of the book by Gene Lyons and Joe Conason is galvanizing stuff, calculated to ruffle more than a few conservative feathers with its highly unflattering depiction of Clinton's enemies in Arkansas and Washington DC.
Narrated by Morgan Freeman, The Hunting of the President opens with the January 21, 1999 impeachment proceedings against Clinton.
A warts-and-all appraisal of the former president runs counter to the thrust of the film, which methodically rebukes each and every accusation the right wing hurled at Clinton.

There is no telling what the hounding of the president (one person talks about being astonished when Clinton is stopped to discuss the Paula Jones case during an international crisis) cost the American public overall, including the 2000 elections.
It is compelling content, and not the work of Thomason and Perry, that make "The Hunting of the President" of note, however.

The Hunting of the President (2004)
Although Thomason and co-director Nickolas Perry dilute the film's effectiveness by inserting jokey stock footage to illustrate their points (Thomason hails from sitcoms, and it shows), The Hunting of the President is still a passionate indictment of the ugly tactics that are now the sad norm in American politics.
At times melodramatic, particularly in its heavy-handed use of film clips and an ominous musical score, The Hunting of the President portrays Clinton as the victim of a witch hunt—or in the case of the Whitewater investigation, a Republican version of the Spanish Inquisition, with Starr as Torquemada.
Of course, whether or not you accept the filmmakers' depiction of Clinton and his enemies depends on your feelings for the former president.
