The great John Ford directed this rousing 1937 adventure with such invigorating physicality that the movie is never compromised by its cornball plot.
The main reason to watch this 1937 film directed by John Ford is for the special effects as the title storm wrecks the fictional island of Manukura and strips it clean of almost all of the trees and all of the people.
Certainly the cornball romance in "The Hurricane" between the native girl Marama (Dorothy Lamour) and the sailor Terangi (Jon Hall) is not particularly captivating.

Largely the handiwork of art director James Basevi, the hurricane of The Hurricane was not directed by the film's official helmsman John Ford, but by an uncredited Stuart Heisler -- a fact readily acknowledged by Ford.
Adapted by Dudley Nichols and Oliver H. Garrett from a novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, The Hurricane was poorly remade in 1979 with Jason Robards and Mia Farrow in the Raymond Massey and Mary Astor roles.

Paramount Pictures signed Lamour to a contract in 1936, creating an exotic southseas image for the young actress: she wore her fabled sarong for the first time in Jungle Princess (1936), the first of three nonsensical but high-grossing "jungle" films in which the ingenuous island girl asked her leading man what a kiss was.
A more prestigious "sarong" role came about in Goldwyn's The Hurricane (1937), wherein Lamour, ever the trouper, withstood tons of water being thrust upon her in the climactic tempest of the film's title.
Lamour's latest film acting job to date was in the 1976 TV movie Death at Love House, though she has been a most loquacious participant in the many Bob Hope TV birthday specials and was recently the sprightly subject of an interview conducted by Prof.

 The Hurricane (1937)
One of the most spectacular productions of the 1930s, HURRICANE opens on the idyllic South Sea island of Manakura with the marriage of two of the indigenous people, Terangi (Jon Hall), a ship's first mate, and Marama (Dorothy Lamour), the daughter of the chief.
As the years pass, Terangi continues to attempt escape, finally succeeding and returning to Manakura after an eight-year absence--just in time to be confronted with one of the most savage natural disasters ever to hit the island.
The devastating hurricane, the true star of the film, was created by special effects wizard James Basevi, who used enormous wind and wave machines along with an elaborate network of pipes and holding tanks to destroy the native village he had built.
