The Illawarra Mercury is the only daily newspaper in Wollongong, the third largest city in the State of New South Wales, Australia.
Despite being marketed towards residents of the Illawarra and surrounding regions, it can be purchased throughout the Sydney metropolitan region where it is popular due to the high quality of its horse-racing and sport coverage.
The Illawarra Mercury is owned by the Fairfax group of newspapers, though the newspaper is editorially independent.

In 1879 an article in the Town and Country Journal stated that "the Bulli mine is the most important mine in the Illawarra, and its development is proceeding at an astounding rate.

The Illawarra Mercury, in its edition of 30 November 1993, reported the death of Leeanne Boatswain, an invalid pensioner, under the headline "Disabled woman, 27, slain - Nowra Murder".
The Council upheld the complaint against the headline in the Illawarra Mercury on the grounds that it was not substantiated by the body of the story, which noted, among other things, the possibility of death by an epileptic fit.
The Illawarra Mercury had published the name of the deceased in the belief that it had been cleared by the police for publication.

While most of their school mates were tucked up in bed, they were out on the water in the dark at 6am, often in temperatures as low as six degrees, putting in the effort which eventually saw them triumph over some of the best marathon paddlers in NSW.

On September 29, the Illawarra Socialist Alliance launched its health policy outside Wollongong Hospital, the same day as the Illawarra Mercury carried the front-page headline “Health shut-out: region's hospitals have reached breaking point”.

In December 1985 it was reported in the Illawarra Mercury that an unusually high rate of a rare form of cancer had been diagnosed amongst the miners at Huntley Colliery.
