The Impressions were an American music group from Chicago, active from 1958 until 1983, whose repertoire included doo-wop, gospel, soul, and RandB.
In the mid-1960s, The Impressions, anxious to compete with Motown acts such as The Temptations and The Four Tops, began appropriating the Motown Sound into their work, but their fortunes fell instead of rising.
Since the early-1980s, The Impressions periodically rebanded in various formats, usually recreating the classic lineup of Mayfield, Gooden, and Cash, and sometimes including Jerry Butler in the lineup.

Rough Edge: My American Heart CD Reviews
I've seen the emo tag accompanying this band through the press, but they're not emo.
My American Heart's "The Meaning in Makeup" is simply a pop rocker with shades of punk, shades of metal and shades of alt rock, but above all else, this album is an unpretentious slab of driving rock with classic rock riffs guiding their sparkling choruses.
Given the mean average age of My American Heart is in the same bracket, they play with confidence and make few, if any mistakes along the way.

 The Impressions, by Bill Pollak
The Impressions (Mayfield, Fred Cash, and Sam Gooden) showcased Mayfield's wide array of talents -- his warm, expressive singing, sophisticated songwriting and fluid, melodic guitar playing -- and provided the vehicle by which Mayfield profoundly influenced the RandB of the 1960s and 1970s.
Instead, the Impressions adopted a style more typical of gospel quartets such as the Soul Stirrers and the Dixie Hummingbirds, with Mayfield, Cash, and Gooden all singing lead alternately throughout the song.
After he left the Impressions in 1970 to establish a solo career, Mayfield's recordings for his own Curtom label were even more consistently message oriented than his work with the Impressions had been.
