  The Incredible Shrinking Man
One of the classics of 1950s science fiction, The Incredible Shrinking Man holds up still today as an involving adventure story (that admittedly only takes place in some guy's basement) thanks to the good special effects and the able work of Grant Williams as a dude that keeps getting smaller and smaller.
Luckily, The Incredible Shrinking Man plays the gimmick seriously, never for a moment forgetting that if you really did shrink down to Inch High Private Eye status, it wouldn't just be riding around on flying ants and sneaking in the girls' locker room.
So you can see that while in today's world an Incredible Shrinking Man would be protected, back in the good old days when women still put on the pearls to vacuum the living room, he was screwed.

The Incredible Shrinking Man is a 1957 science fiction film directed by Jack Arnold and adapted for the screen by Richard Matheson from his novel The Shrinking Man.
The final permutation (female shrinkage) eventually appeared in 1981 with The Incredible Shrinking Woman, in which Lily Tomlin played the wife of an advertising man; she shrinks as a result of exposure to household products.
Currently there are plans for a remake of The Incredible Shrinking Man as a comedy which will revolve around a magician (slated to be Eddie Murphy) who suddenly starts to dwindle and frantically searches for a way to revert back to his previous size.

Although there is some wonderful process projection work in Incredible Shrinking Man,(the cat looking into the dollhouse, for example), most of the effects were achieved simply by creating over-sized props, and part of the film's charm is its low-budget quality.
Incredible Shrinking Man marked the third confluence of various strands of talent: director Jack Arnold was one of the pioneers of the resurgence of 3-D movies in the 1950s, particularly with his landmark film, Creature From the Black Lagoon.

The Incredible Shrinking Woman Film Review - Time Out Film
The theme should be watertight in the Nine to Five, would-be progressive mould: Woman suffering (literal) diminution under the weight of patriarchal, consumerist culture; while the advance prospect of seeing Lily Tomlin biting ankles is tasty enough to quell doubts about the wisdom of tampering with Richard Matheson's original sci-fi premise.
But good intentions and one's own goodwill are soon diminished as script and direction conspire to render a sitcom satire that's indistinguishable from its target.
A cloying cuteness soon pervades as Tomlin, shrinking after being sprayed with a new perfume marketed by her advertising executive husband, becomes a media celebrity; and the conclusion - curse becomes cure - is recuperative in more ways than one.

The Incredible Shrinking Woman came out in 1981 and the movie actually more or less reflected the consumerist attitudes of the time, the dawning of the Reagan administration.
The movie wasn't too well liked by the critics, they thought that Lily Tomlin didn't give it her full here and that the script was simply so-so, but actually I thought the movie makes perfect sense.
And while the Incredible Shrinking Woman was thought of by the critics as another misguided adventure by Lily Tomlin, it's really a lot better than the critics will let you believe, so give it a watch.
