Incredible String Band Live at the Iron Horse and Joe's Pub
Mike introduced the band as "our own tribute band," saying that they had waited long enough for a tribute band to form, and when one didn't, they decided to do their own.
In 2000, Robin Williamson, Clive Palmer, and Mike Heron reunited for a couple of years doing gigs as the Incredible String Band before Robin left to continue persuing his own solo career (for info concerning Robin, visit Pigs Whisker Music), leaving Mike and Clive at the nucleus of the current Incredible String Band.
I can't really give a blow-by-blow description of what I thought was as good as or maybe even better than the record or the classic ISB recordings of old, but I was mesmerized both evenings by their joy, charm, and their truly incredible interplay.

Their 2003 tour exhumed classics from the first six ISB albums, generally acknowledged to be the band's artistic high water mark.
ISB had been riding the huge critical acclaim of their third album The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter and a string of beautiful releases in its wake (Wee Tam, The Big Huge, I Looked Up, and the ambitious, sprawling medieval road show U).
Almost immediately after The Incredible String band had finished recording their debut album for Elektra Records in 1966, virtuoso banjo player and third guitarist Palmer left the group to travel to Kashmir (and eventually to form C.O.B.).

 The Incredible String Band
The Incredible String Band was certainly there before Steeleye Span, and before Fairport Convention, and before the Strawbs, but whether there was somebody on that same circuit before the ISB, I don't know, and at this time in my life, don't even want to know.
Williamson and Heron are fine songwriters in their own right, and their numerous "stylizations", while they certainly are little more than that and, in my humble opinion, do not convey the required medievalistic atmosphere as well as those of their successors, are always pleasant, sometimes memorable, and, on rare occasions, brilliant.
Actually, coming off from a few extra bits of info about the band, I'm surprised to learn that it was Palmer who was the "glue" holding the trio during these first three years, with Heron and Williamson practically hating each other.

By the early Seventies the band were drawing upon just about every musical style and idiom under the sun, and continued to release albums with indecent regularity.
Devotees travelled from as far afield as Argentina and Australia to attend, and were there again in 2000 when the officially-reformed Incredible String Band—which by this time had recruited the long-lost Clive Palmer, Welsh keyboard wizard Lawson Dando and Bina Williamson—did a short concert-and-festival tour, playing to wildly enthusiastic sell-out crowds at every venue.
The remaining line-up of Heron, Palmer and Dando was augmented by the singer and multi-instrumentalist Fluff.

Not that any `TISB' tunes made a general splash, there are certainly some memorable lyrics from previous albums which always come to mind when I return to them, as I do about once a year when I go on a TISB listening marathon.

Dark mutterings of their veering ultimately toward a more commercial electric folk rock sell-out by the mid-70s did not detract the band and indeed the later ‘electric’ albums reissued in these excellent, top value 2-for-1 sets from BGO have weathered the passage of 30 years rather well.

Ground and Sky review - The Incredible String Band - The Incredible String Band
The Incredible String Band was a pair of Scottish songwriters and multi-instrumentalists (not always played expertly, mind you, but that added to the charm): Robin Williamson and Mike Heron.
The ISB only existed for some 8 years or so, but in that time were extremely prolific, releasing over 10 albums and in the process influencing everyone from Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin to Chris Cutler of Henry Cow.
Overall, it sounds lightweight compared to where they were soon to go (hell, Robin Williamson only plays five instruments here!), though there is the occasional glimpse offered at the band's eclectic and pan-cultural yearnings (e.g., "Maybe Someday," which Heron describes in the liner notes as "Bulgarian, Indian, Scottish, and schizoid").
