 Informer
Seeing a poster that offers a £20 reward for the capture of an old friend of his from the IRA, Gypo is unable to stop himself from informing the police, especially after he and Katie find themselves bewailing their misery and entrapment in front of another poster advertising passage for two to America for £20.
The movie’s sympathies are totally 100% on the Republican side, and as soon as Gypo has done the dirty deed his fate is sealed.
The whole of the movie’s tendency to signify—for everything from the locations, to the props, to the lighting, to the tableau-like posing of figures, to the weird slow-motion dialogue, to mean something—this almost paranoid sense of the world, owes much to the nightmarish subjectivity of Expressionist films.

DVD review of The Informer (The John Ford Film Collection) - DVD Town   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The movie plays out with sparse dialogue over the course of a single night, as Gypo betrays his friend and is then resolutely pursued by the IRA and by his own awareness of his betrayal.
While the happenings in "The Informer" get a bit repetitious, the histrionics of the secondary actors get a touch stagey, and the settings get a tad oppressive, they don't interfere with the movie's overall appeal as a strong, evocative piece of storytelling.
For instance, one comment tells us that the movie is about "a man's temptation, transgression, fear, remorse, retribution, forgiveness, and death." That is a reasonably clear and concise summing up of the film's content.

The Informer, Liam O'Flaherty's novel of the the Irish "troubles" of the early 1920s, was first filmed in England in 1929, with Cyril McLaglen in the lead.
When director John Ford remade The Informer in 1935, the role of the tragic Irish roisterer Gypo Nolan went to Cyril's brother Victor McLaglen.
Finally dragged before the rebel court, Gypo tries to bluff his way out of trouble, fingering another man (Donald Meek) as the informer, but this subterfuge quickly falls apart.

John Ford’s “The Informer” is one of the director’s greatest films and therefore one of the greatest motion pictures ever made.
“The Informer” was born from the Silent German Expressionism of Murnau, Lang, and Pabst.
“The Informer” may be a difficult film for modern audiences, but if the style is both accepted and understood, “The Informer” is a near perfect work of art.

The movie's style mirrors his deteriorating state, wrapping scene after scene in murky fog and offering glimpses of the delirious visions that invade Gypo's suffering, whiskey-dazed mind.
It's harder to explain the Oscar® for Steiner, since his score is one of the movie's weak elements, stressing dramatic moments far too strongly and imitatively "mickey-mousing" the action more than once.
The Informer was made at RKO after several other studios passed on it, worrying it wouldn't be commercial enough.

Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) is one of the best nautical adventure films of all time and one of MGM's greatest classics.
The rousing, 18th century story of the Bounty's mutiny, directed by Frank Lloyd, was adapted from the first two volumes of the Charles Nordhoff-James Norman Hall 1932 best seller, The Bounty Trilogy (composed of Mutiny on the Bounty, Men Against the Sea, and Pitcairn Island).
For authenticity, the film was shot on location in the South Pacific's Tahiti, as well as on Catalina Island, Santa Barbara, and in MGM's Culver City studios, over a period of three months.

A boy soldier during the Boer War, British actor Victor McLaglen later worked as a prizefighter (once losing to Jack Johnson in six rounds) and a vaudeville and circus performer.
He soon moved to Hollywood, where he got lead and supporting roles; his basic screen persona was that of a large, brutish, but soft-hearted man of action.
He appeared in many John Ford films, often as a military man. McLaglen made the transition to sound successfully, and for his work in Ford's The Informer (1935), he won the Best Actor Oscar.

When John Ford self-deprecatingly introduced himself with, 'My name's John Ford, I make Westerns', he had a canny sense of the way he would be remembered.
Though he started cranking out silent quickies (his first director's credit was Red Saunders Plays Cupid in 1917), his great Hollywood years found him hailed as an important, Oscar-worthy maker of significant films like The Informer, How Green Was My Valley and The Grapes Of Wrath.
After the silent superproduction The Iron Horse, he stayed off the range until 1939, when Stagecoach revived a genre that allegedly was just for kids by mixing shoot 'em up thrills with literary merit (the inspiration is a story by Guy de Maupassant) and breathtaking pictorial skills.
