CNN - Review: Don't put colorful, Austrian 'Inheritors' out to pasture -- November 23, 1998
"The Inheritors" is the story of a bunch of overworked peasants in post-World War I Austria who unexpectedly inherit a farm from their cruel master when somebody sticks his sorry ass with a knife one evening and kills him.
Like "Days of Heaven," there are touches of magic sprinkled throughout "The Inheritors" (a lowly circus performer suddenly passes through the village with a huge elephant in tow), and sexual trysts in the haylofts are often motivating factors for the characters.
In many ways, the theme of "The Inheritors" is the appropriation of power and the changes that can occur when people are suddenly allowed to take over the reins of their own lives.

Jealousy, hypocrisy, greed and revenge run rampant on the farm in The Inheritors, a witty and often abrasive class satire from Austria.
The peasants eventually overcome their initial fears to become "siebtelbauern" (one-seventh farmers) but their progress is jeopardised by some cloak and dagger activity from the enraged locals.
A delirious modern spin on the 'Heimatfilm', a potent national genre, The Inheritors was Austria's official Oscar entry in 1998.

Peter S. Alterman- Aliens in Golding's The Inheritors
Neanderthal consciousness in The Inheritors is organic, growing out of the idea of a different consciousness, rather than being the product of a rubber mask or an unreasonable extension of one capacity, as is the case with many other science fiction aliens.
Thus, the central concern of The Inheritors, introduced early, is an examination of two themes formerly considered the domain of pulp science fiction: the alien and telepathy, which together Golding uses to develop his observers.
The purpose served by the alien beings in The Inheritors is, then, to comment upon the very nature of human modes of thought, perception, and behavior.

The villagers and the tight religious community are affronted by the inheritors' impudence.
What The Inheritors adds is a sharp socio-political angle, crystalline images by cinematographer Peter von Haller, and engaging performances by this entire group of Austrian actors.
The story meanders a bit in the latter third as the murder mystery plays more of a central role and characterization is emphasized at the expense of social analysis, but overall, The Inheritors is never less than penetrating, unusual, and finely achieved.

Set in rural Austria in the early 20th century, "The Inheritors" is the story of a group of seven peasant workers who inherit a farm after the childless farm owner is murdered by a mysterious old woman.
Sophie Rois gives a very strong performance as a tough and independent peasant with a young son who finds the courage to stand up to both the local farmers and her fellow peasants.
Simon Schwarz is excellent as Lukas, the self-appointed leader of the seven inheritors.

In The Inheritors, however, the thoughts of a group of Neandertal men are projected in a fictitious picture in the imagination.
In Wells' text one can read that Neandertal men are hunched grey wolf-like monsters,3, and that the first humans acted in their true self-interest when they killed those Neandertal men that came too close to them for they would have eaten their children.
The question as to who 'the inheritors' of the novel's title are may be answered by saying that the reader, themselves organized in society, belongs to the inheritors.
