Birds of Fire (1973) is the Mahavishnu Orchestra's second studio album and the last one performed by the original Mahavishnu Orchestra line-up, before Jean-Luc Ponty replaced Jerry Goodman on violin and Narada Michael Walden replaced Billy Cobham on drums.
As in the case of The Mahavishnu Orchestra's previous album, The Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire consisted solely of compositions by John McLaughlin.

The earlier two Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire haven't aged so well.
IMF is kinda in-between Devotion and Birds stylistically, has some moments for sure, but is kinda passable.

Birds of Fire, Innermounting Flame, Visions Of The Emerald Beyond are all sweet albums.
My opinion on which is the greatest fusion album of all time changes on a daily basis, and it's always between the same two albums: "The Inner Mounting Flame" and Return to Forever's "Romantic Warrior." Hearing these two discs changed my life forever.
This album was even top of the charts in it's day, quite the feat for a complex instrumental fusion record...Make sure to follow the rest of John Mclaughlin's career if you like this, his solo albums as well as Shakti are incredible too.

"Inner Mounting Flame" is indeed a very powerful fusion album....
McLaughlin went on in many directions since then - Indian Classical fusion with Shakti, an acoustic tribute album to Bill Evans, fairly straight bop on "After the Rain", among other things - all the while retaining a sense of adventurousness due to his strong creative personality.
The Inner Mounting Flame is still one of my all time top 5 and I'm 56.

The exceptions are of course the untouchable brilliance of "Meeting of the Spirits," "A Lotus on Irish Streams," and "Dance of Maya." That's not to say anything bad about the remaining tunes; I like 'em all.
On the other hand, Inner Mounting Flame is certainly the band at their rawest, most visceral, and least dated-sounding.
This is great stuff that any serious music fan should have represented in their collections.
