Forest Trees -- Executive Summary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-05)
Trees are found in a broad spectrum of land-use systems, from planned and managed systems to naturally occurring stands.
Tree collections held as seed are primarily for short-or medium-term storage for use in afforestation (the planting of trees in unforested areas) and reforestation activities.
The number of tree species with clear potential for future use that could be managed in breeding or prebreeding operations is at least twice the number of species currently used, and their inclusion would quadruple the number of populations used.

Trees with less than four and one-half (4-1/2) feet of clear trunk shall be measured as the diameter of the largest vertical branch or leader at breast height.
If that replacement tree is found not to be viable at the end of the second yearly monitoring period, the licensee may pay the appropriate amount into the tree preservation trust fund as required by subsection N in lieu of planting a third replacement tree.

Trees are integral to “carbon sequestering,” defined as “a process whereby trees and other plants remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and through photosynthesis, turn it into plant material.” These “fixers” of carbon dioxide also produce “exhale” oxygen, which explains the rainforest’s nickname as the “Earth’s lungs.”

Covering four centuries of development in the cities of Europe and America, this book shows how trees became integral to urban landscapes by looking at the historical evolution of the spaces in which they were planted and how these spaces were used.
Reflecting on the impact trees have had on what many consider to be the fundamental aspects of city life—people, buildings, social and economic activity—Lawrence draws on graphic materials, written descriptions, local histories, and archival research to provide a unique look at the treeĆs role in urban landscape history.
Primarily concerned with aesthetics, power, and national traditions, Lawrence reflects on the differing impacts city trees have had on multiple aspects of culture, from their roles as symbols and their representation of economic prosperity to the differing ways nations planted their trees, which gradually blended into an international style of urban planting.
