  The Internationale
THE INTERNATIONALE draws on people’s stories of an emotionally charged radical song (the long-time anthem of socialism and communism) to celebrate the relationship between music and social change, and to evaluate the uncertain fate of once thriving movements of the left.
Using rare archival footage, the film traces the development and meanings of the song before and after the Russian Revolution, during the Great Depression in the U.S. and the Civil War in Spain, and since the fall of the Soviet Union, Tiananmen Square, and the end of the Cold War.
THE INTERNATIONALE takes us on a lyrical journey from the Paris Commune to the collapse of Soviet Communism, from the slums of Kingston Jamaica to Tiananmen Square, in search of what might be the only song to change the world.

When the Soviet Union was created in 1922 from a merger between Russia and other neighbouring soviet communist republics, the new national anthem that was in use was the "Internationale", a socialist anthem written in the late nineteenth century by two Frenchmen.
This song was already in use as Russia's de facto anthem due to it being the party song of the Bolsheviks who seized power in the 1917 October revolution and, with Russia being the leading republic in the union, it was their anthem that would be used.
"The Internationale" has since been used by a variety of communist, socialist, and other left-wing groups as their anthem, making it the unofficial anthem of socialism.

And yet The Internationale falls short of capturing the lyricism of the song and the ineffable impact it has wielded over the decades.
Made to celebrate the fall of Mussolini's fascist government in Italy, this version of the Verdi composition incorporates national anthems of the Allied countries, including "The Internationale." Amid the Cold War, the song was later excised by American censors.
Remaining supplemental material includes A Brief History of "The Internationale", which is in text form; written lyrics to "The Internationale" (in French, U.S.-English, British-English, Zulu, Spanish, Russian and Bragg's retooled version) and a director's biography.

Dick Gaughan's Website - Songs Archive - The Internationale
I have sung this in the company of Communists from around the world who didn't speak a word of English and it is a wonderful experience to hear it sung simultaneously in several different languages, something which to me is the very essence of the song being put into practice.
For that reason I also sing the word "Internationale" as "International-ay" as it is pronounced that way in most other languages.
I actually think that to insist on doing it differently from the rest of the world is nothing more than residual British chauvinism and completely contradicts the idea that "The Internationale unites the human race".

Although "The Internationale" is good-and inspiring-listening, the brevity of the record and the liberty Bragg takes with artistic interpretation could leave the listener wanting more.
I know of several versions of "Joe Hill" (Paddy Reilly, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, etc.) and while a contribution by Bragg would have been welcome, it was more exciting for me to hear it sung about the late, great Phil Ochs.
His version of The Internationale might not be the same as the original, but times have changed, and for the worker's to be able to have a song that represents them, it would be foolish to sing about things that aren't relevant anymore.
