The Ipcress File was the first spy novel by Len Deighton, published in 1962.
The Ipcress File was a downbeat alternative to the James Bond movies, which were being made at the same time.
In The Ipcress File these take the form of each chapter being headed with a quote from a horoscope, which relates to the action in the chapter, though vaguely, as in most horoscopes.

AudioRevolution.com DVD Review of The Ipcress File
THE IPCRESS FILE is another matter, and the best of the Harry Palmer movies; it gives little or no sign of the turmoil surrounding its production that director Sidney J. Furie complains about to editor Peter Hunt on the commentary track.
Although THE IPCRESS FILE is smoothly produced and as handsome as any of the Bond movies, it really is on a much smaller canvas; Harry doesn't even leave London, and he's lower-echelon all the way.
Despite the flamboyance of Furie's camera and the strong supporting cast, THE IPCRESS FILE is unquestionably a Michael Caine movie, and his witty, underplayed performance is the reason it became popular.

The Ipcress File is a 1965 British thriller starring Michael Caine in one of his earliest roles, before Hollywood stardom truly set in.
In fact, the entire movie itself is like that -- unlike a Hollywood film, The Ipcress File doesn’t go over-the-top with the storyline, even though the plot is something that would be just fine in a wild American thriller.
Overall, while The Ipcress File may be too old-fashioned, low-key and laid-back for some, I’m happy that I watched it.
