In order to better blend the computer-generated Giant into the traditionally animated film, technicians came up with a program that gave the Giant's lines a slight "wobble", in order to match the natural line imperfections found in hand-drawn animation.
The familiar premise is obviously out of Spielberg's E.T. One scene even has the giant reaching out his finger to the boy in much the same way ET did to 10 year old Elliott when he departed this earth.
IRON GIANT takes place during 1957 in a small town in Maine.

The giant crash-lands on a 1957 night when America is peering up at the speck of Sputnik in the sky, and munches his way through a Maine village, eating TV antennas and cars, until he finds a power plant.
One night Hogarth discovers their TV antenna is missing and follows the Iron Giant's trail to the power plant, where he saves the robot from electrocution after it chomps on some live wires.
The Iron Giant is understandably too big to conceal in the closet, but there's a funny sequence where Hogarth brings the creature's hand into the house, and it scampers around like a disobedient dog.

Simply put, "The Iron Giant" is a fun and engaging family film that should entertain adults as much as kids, the latter of whom will probably turn this into a hit, whether in theaters or later on video.
The Iron Giant's initial appearances, with his towering height, glowing eyes and presumed (to kids) menacing demeanor, may be unsettling or downright scary to some kids.
The entire ending sequence where the Giant battles the Army men who have opened fire on him, as well as the thought and sight of a quickly approaching nuclear missile and finally a moment where Hogarth appears to be dead (he's not) may be suspenseful and/or frightening to some kids.

No, Iron Giant is competing against my rose-tinted memory of those shows - shows seen back when I was so young and impressionable, when I didn't recognize the crude or amateurish, but when I was ready to soar through the sky, cradled in the hands of a giant flying robot.
The characters are all interesting and well-defined, especially the boy, Hogarth Hughes (voiced by Eli Marienthal) and the giant robot, voiced in basso profundo by Vin Diesel.
However, I would still have to say that Iron Giant is a slick 90's take-off of the 60's Gigantor.
