Microphones: Song Islands: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Song Islands compiles pretty much every non-album Microphones track in existence, aside from those that were included on last year's vinyl-only Blood LP.
As these songs were not assembled as an album, the more sonically overpowering tracks lose some of the punch they carried as part of a greater entity.
Song Islands is at its most successful when the more basic elements of songcraft are given precedence.

Here, as elsewhere on the islands, the summer sun had dried and withered much of the flora, but the older lava flows were covered with ginestra, the yellow broom that flowers in April and May, when, according to Antonio, the air of Stromboli is heady with its perfume.
Of all the Aeolians it is the richest in fresh water, and thus the greenest: vineyards, olive groves and caper plantations are carefully farmed, and the upper slopes of the volcanoes are covered with scrub oak, arbutus and chestnut trees.
Much of the island is a nature reserve with good hiking trails leading into the wooded areas and up to the top of the higher mountain, the Fossa delle Felci, whose crater is a frothy pool of green ferns.

The Microphones: Song Islands - PopMatters Music Review
Song Islands is one of those thorns in a collector's side, whereby their fealty to a band's every release is dashed by a singles collection that rewards the infidels for their lazy indifference.
On songs like "Weird Storm" you can almost visualize him using the sounds in the same way that a cinematographer might focus on one point in space and blur to chaos everything in the margins.
Putting on Song Islands is like discovering a secret passageway in an old house, a small brush with the natural but extraordinary.

Song Islands gathers most of their singles and EPs, including hard-to-find releases on tiny labels like @Coming in Second and @Instatone Brand, and proves that even at the beginning, the group's approach was firmly in place.
Still, even though they're not presented in strictly chronological order, the tracks on Song Islands do trace the band's evolution: songs like "Feedback (Life, Love, Loop)," "Weird Storm," and "Deeply Buried" are wrapped in more noisy preambles and tangents than some of the group's more recent material.
From their rawest work to their most refined, Song Islands does an able job of cataloging the Microphones' creative energies in a relatively unedited fashion.

On the islands, of which Sicily was by far the most important, the pre- existing church system was maintained.
It was precisely because of this that his writings became to a great extent the compendium theologiae or textbook of the Middle Ages, a position for which his work in popularizing his great predecessors fitted him well.

She is singing "Sing Me a Song of the Islands" as she heads towards shore with her blonde hair blowing gently in the breeze as she softly offers the song in that vastly under-rated melodious and well modulated beguiling voice of hers.
