The Jerk (1979) | The Stop Button
The film gets the title from the colloquialism, “What do you think I am, some kind of a jerk or something?” Except, in that colloquialism jerk doesn’t mean obnoxious person, it means sap, dope, maybe patsy.
The film is so delineated into scenes, once she’s done, she has to stick around, but the film doesn’t have anything to do with her.
The second half of the film, which feels like someone checked his or her watch and got really worried about the running time, is hurried and almost all in summary or half-scene.

The Jerk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jerk (1979) is Carl Reiner's rags-to-riches-to-rags film comedy of belated self-discovery.
Navin Johnson (Martin) is the adopted white son of fl sharecroppers, who grows to adulthood naïvely unaware of the fact of his adoption.
However, the stereotypes are so blatant that their inclusion in the film should be considered as the filmmakers' ironic comment on the evils of stereotyping.

 Jerk, The Review (1979)
This was the first of the film collaborations between star and writer Martin and director Carl Reiner (Carl Gottlieb also contributed to the script and story with Michael Elias).
If Woody Allen has an film career consisting of the "early funny ones" and the rest, then you could say Martin has as well as his later films rarely scaled the heights of comedy attained by these initial movies.
"Jerk" implies a mean-spirited quality which is never apparent in his personality: what he is is an imbecile, and Martin plays that to the hilt.

 The Jerk
For films one will always stand out "I was born a poor fl child." The thing is the line was delivered in a voice over by Steve Martin, a definitely white individual.
Martin portrays Navin R. Johnson, who at the onset of the film is homeless and in wretched shape, breaking the fourth wall to relate to the audience how he came to such dire circumstances.
Reiner treated this film almost as homage to the days of vaudeville, the clown in the baggy paints and sad face making the audience laugh at his dire plight.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews: The Jerk (1979)
One of Steve Martin's earliest and funniest films, The Jerk is a wonderfully offbeat comedy.
Although it has its occasional rough spots, on the whole the film is hilarious.
Martin hits all the right notes in his performance: he doesn't try to "act" funny; he merely portrays a funny character in a funny story, and that, supported by some spectacularly well calculated directing, makes an unforgettable gem of a comedy.

"I was born a poor fl child" — so begins this absurd film, perhaps the defining comedy of the '70s.
The Jerk tells the life story of Navin R. Johnson (played brilliantly by Steve Martin), a none-too-bright white boy raised by a family of fl sharecroppers, who somehow manages to reach adulthood without ever discovering he was adopted.
The Jerk's success is easily attributed to a talented writer who can deftly mix one-liners with sight gags.

It emboldened Martin to try his hand at his first serious film, Pennies From Heaven, a movie he was anxious to do because of the desire to avoid being typecast.
