In the Jesus and Mary Chain, which the Reids formed outside of Glasgow in 1984 with bassist Douglas Hart and drummer Murray Dalglish (quickly replaced by Bobby Gillespie), these two polarized aesthetics converged; equal parts bubblegum and formless guitar distortion, their sound both celebrated pop conventions and thoroughly subverted them.
After a two-year layoff (during which time Gillespie exited to form Primal Scream, and was replaced by John Moore), the Jesus and Mary Chain returned with Darklands, a dramatic shift in approach which stripped away the feedback to expose the skeletal guitar pop at the music's core.
William Reid left the group during the subsequent tour, and in 1999, the Jesus and Mary Chain officially disbanded.

With Black Rebel Motorcycle Club currently spreading their love like a fever, the release of a Jesus And Mary Chain singles collection is perfectly timed.
The Jesus And Mary Chain knew it better than pretty much anyone.
The closing tracks here - 1999's 'I Hate Rock And Roll' and 'I Love Rock'n'Roll' - show an admirable contrariness but expecting The Jesus And Mary Chain to match their early impact was like expecting a meteor to leap out of its crater and fall to earth all over again.

Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard - Work - The The Jesus and Mary Chain
One of the first video works they made together was made during their final year at Goldsmiths - The The Jesus and Mary Chain.
The performance was (of course) disastrous, the plug was pulled and Iain was physically attacked by local university students who had, perhaps unwisely, expected to see the 'real' Jesus and Mary Chain play at the local school hall.
This new version of the piece followed a similar format to the original and was titled Stoned and Dethroned - The The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Jesus warned of pseudoprophetes, who would have done some wondrous exorcism or such, but who were not speaking for Him or the Father, and who were in fact corrupt and corrupting.
And Jesus here cautions those who would speak with authority to be very careful; and he cautions us to use great discernment in hearing the words of those who claim to speaking for God.
Jesus' words conveyed the message that the poor will always be around, but that He was to be with his friends for only a bit longer.

Jesus and Mary Chain formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1984 and didn’t disband until founding member William Reid left in 1999.
Basically, Jesus and Mary Chain were a part of the British scene that incorporated distorted noise, gloom, and ambiance into their music.
Despite the fact that Jesus and Mary Chain is generally seen as relatively gloomy, I don’t get that vibe from the album.

The Jesus and Mary Chain: Munki: Pitchfork Record Review
William and Jim Reid have been writing the same five songs over and over since their ground- breaking 1985 debut Psychocandy; as the engine that drives the Jesus and Mary Chain's music has never been broken, there has never been a need to fix it.
Of the 17 here, about 10 are rea winners, driving and catchy with the melodic strength and innate pop sense that the Reid brothers bring to each and every album.
And while the sound is the Jesus and Mary Chain all the way and they've still yet to try anything really new, they're good at what they do, dammit, and I'll take Munki over a dozen other bands failed "experiments" any day.

Even now, the early Mary Chain singles sound astounding, the way pop and avant-garde elements are mangled together so beautifully.
The Mary Chain's last two singles, from 1998, "I Hate Rock & Roll" and "I Love Rock & Roll," neatly close affairs: bitter and celebratory; consumed and confused by music and the impulse to make it, which has driven them for so long.
JMC's recorded output on record was always a little too steady for me. they'd find a sound, a beat, and stick to it for an entire album, and this was who they were.

Establishing their name with twenty-minute concerts that led straight to tabloid stories of riots and rampant nihilism, then buttressing the buzz with Good Quote ("twenty minutes of us is worth any amount of money"), the Reids went on to deliver on their seemingly arrogant claims of greatness by releasing a bona fide masterpiece, 1985's Psychocandy.
BB: After Psychocandy, some people thought the Jesus and Mary Chain was supposed to overdose, never make another record, and basically die young and beautiful.
I mean, Jesus had a hard-on, Jesus was flesh and blood and bones, and I know that.

A revolutionary album when it first appeared in the mid-eighties, 'Psychocandy' and Jesus And Mary Chain later went onto be an influence on the likes of Ride, The Pixies, Sonic Youth and other innovative guitar bands circa the early nineties.

Exploding on to a hi-fi near you is the first full-length album from the band who count The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Gun Club and Earl Brutus amongst their pedigree.
Planting Seeds first involvment with the band started back in 1999 with the limited release of "Some Candy Talking: A Fan Tribute To The Jesus And Mary Chain." From there Freeheat contributed their acoustic version of "Back On The Water" to PSR's critically acclaimed "Sunsets and Silhouettes" compilation.
Formed by Jesus and Mary Chain members Jim Reid and Ben Lurie after that group’s untimely demise, with ex-Gun Club rhythm section Romi Mori and Nick Sanderson, Freeheat continues the Chain’s legacy of brooding, fuzzed-out jangle pop.

Their debut EP for Labrador »Lost« is the most emotional, desolate and utterly wonderful pop music you can possibly hear in the year 2006.

American history might also include within such a definition the devoted followers of Mary Baker Eddy the founder of Christian Science, or the Mormons united through their devotion to Joseph Smith.
But it is also important to note that some groups, which may have once been labeled as "cults" continue to be controversial due to their unsafe or destructive practices.
Two examples of groups that continue to be problematic and often destructive are the former Russellites, now known as "Jehovah's Witnesses," that once prohibited organ transplants and still expects its members to refuse blood transfusions, which has resulted in numerous deaths.

Father Joseph Romano and Professor Brittany Hamar are lured separately to New York’s Grand Central Station with the promise of being given a manuscript written by Jesus’ brother, James, where she is shot and he is framed for it.
She was targeted because she had received a portion of the gospel already from a mysterious source in Vienna and is writing a book debunking Jesus; the reason for his involvement is withheld until the end.
None of this really matters, because Romano and Hamar are too busy traveling, arguing about Jesus and revealing personal details amid descriptions of Vienna and the south of France that would feel at home in Lonely Planet guidebooks.
