  Jethro Tull (band)
Jethro Tull is a progressive rock band that was formed in the 1960s.
Jethro Tull "paid their dues" in clubs in the mid-to-late 1960s with a revolving line-up which eventually crystallized into Ian Anderson (vocals, flute, acoustic guitar, and later many other instruments), Mick Abrahams (electric guitar), Glenn Cornick (bass guitar) and Clive Bunker (drums).
Although the band was reportedly proud of the sound, the album was not well-received, and as a result of either that or the throat problems Anderson developed singing the demanding Under Wraps material on tour (or both), Tull went on a three-year hiatus, during which Anderson began a highly successful salmon- farming business.

Jethro Tull (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jethro Tull, famous for its unique brand of progressive rock, was formed in Blackpool, England in the 1960s.
The album is a combination of heavy rock music focusing on themes such as social outcasts and organized religion, and some lighter acoustic fare about the mundanity of everyday life.
This was a concept album consisting of a single very long track split over the two sides of the LP, with a number of movements melded together and some repeating themes.

Jethro Tull : The Jethro Tull Christmas Album - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
In fact, three tracks from those two albums were reworked for this release; "Fire at Midnight," "Ring Out Solstice Bells" and "Weathercock." Only "Ring Out Solstice Bells" appeared to be the obvious choice for a Christmas album, but given Anderson's offbeat perspective of things, the other two tracks assimilate nicely.
From the traditional side of Christmas, Tull gives "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" a jazzy adaptation reminiscent of "Bouree" from Stand Up (which is also revisited on this recording) and "We Five Kings" sounds rhythmically similar to "Living in the Past," particularly the bass guitar line.
The album's overall mix of folk, jazz, pop, rock, and classical elements carries it beyond the holiday listening for which it was intended, and is all woven together so skillfully as to make this an essential Tull album, their first in almost three decades and their most musically rewarding.

This being their very first holiday recording [ever] since their first album [was released] in 1968 (This Was) makes it a real jewel for the ages, particularly for the many progressive rock enthusiast such as yours truly.
"The Jethro Tull Christmas Album" has plenty of tradition sprinkled about it to qualify it as a seasonal recording, although at times I got so wrapped up in the progression of the music I forgot I was listening to the spirit of the season.
That factor does not make the album loose its appeal however, as it is one of their best recordings, right up there with the many classic releases that they have given us over the past four decades.

While it's all reassuringly wrapped-up in the wintry Victorian romanticism of yore (the album cover, after all, is a charmingly subtle joke), The Christmas Album still questions--in curmudgeonly Ian Anderson fashion--what all this back-slapping bonhomie, alcoholic immoderation and High-street retail hysteria is all about.
Two of my favorite non-traditional Christmas songs are "I Believe in Father Christmas" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer and "Christmas Song" by Jethro Tull, which are not exactly the sort of songs you would remember to pull out of your music library at Yule time.

Rather, with this CD Jethro Tull have managed to capture in both verse and melody the spirit of giving, sharing, and perfunctory overindulgence that ostensibly go with the Christmas season, contrasted with the melancholy and flat-out destitution that the less-fortunate among us actually experience during this time of year.
This interplay of content and style are presented against a backdrop of earthly Pagan solstice symbolism, all of which Jethro Tull have managed to integrate as a kind of ecumenical "Birthday Card at Christmas," which not incidentally is the title of the introductory track.

Jethro Tull, The Jethro Tull Christmas Album, Information and link page
Actually, there was a Jethro Tull (1674-1741), who was a British lawyer/farmer famous for introducing new farming methods, including a drill invention for planting seeds in a row (his name was the inspiration for the band), but that fellow has nothing to do with this fantastic holiday CD.
Ian Anderson, the founder and leader of Jethro Tull since its inception in the British blues boom of the late 1960s, has always been the odd-fitting piece in classic rock's puzzle; after all, his principal musical instrument is the flute, and most rock bands steer clear of wind instruments entirely.
If, on the other hand, you are familiar with Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson), enjoy classic rock, and/or just enjoy hearing excellent musicianship on a set of inspired and adventurous Christmas tunes, then you cannot go wrong with this CD.

Jethro Tull released their first studio album with "This Was" in 1968 and their 21st in 2003 with "The Jethro Tull Christmas Album." There is a common misconception that Tull is a heavy metal and prog rock band.
In truth, throughout the years, Tull has produced albums with distinctive sounds crossing and melding jazz, blues, folk, classical, Elizabethan, prog/art rock, and electronic genres (just to name a few) with just a smidge of heavy metal.
While such typologies are always debatable among the fans (heck, some would organize albums by Ian's period clothing), this provides a good guide to discovering records matching your musical tastes.
