Topic: The Keys of Marinus

NZDWFC: TSV9: Exegesis: The Keys of Marinus
Inside they find the Conscience of Marinus - a giant mind-control computer designed to keep the planet free from crime, which worked until Yartek, one of the Voords, found a means of immunising against its influence, necessitating that the Keepers remove and hide the five controlling micro-circuits around the planet in safe-keeping.
He gives them teleport bracelets which take them to the locations of the keys; the first the city of Morphoton, a place of riches and splendour where their every wishes are granted.
They escape to the third key, hidden in a cavern on a mountainside where they face problems with a treacherous hunter and the guardian warriors; and finally on to the fourth key in the city of Millenium where Ian becomes framed for a murder.

Notherby's :: Doctor Who - The Keys of Marinus
The Keys Of Marinus is interesting in that many concepts of the show later found its way to future Who stories.
Originally broadcast in 1964, The Keys of Marinus is a six-episode arc that features the doctor's original traveling companions, science teacher Ian Chesterton, history teacher Barbara Wright, and the doctor's granddaughter, Susan, who is given to screaming at the first sign of peril.
Doctor and company are compelled to retrieve four microcircuits that are the keys to the Conscience of Marinus, a computer that has eliminated evil from the minds of men (except apparently the evil Yartek and his web-suited Voords, who want to seize the machine).

The other main issue I take with ‘The Keys of Marinus’ is to do with the Conscience, which is basically a brain washing machine.
The key in the mace is a good plot device — it is possible for the audience to work it out and results in Eyesen’s capture.
The sets are impressive and do adequately showcase a different area of the planet Marinus, from a sandy beach, to a Romanesque city of Morphoton, to a jungle, to snowcovered plains and mountains, to a 'somewhat' highly civilized city in Millenius.

 The Keys of Marinus
Their task was to defend the key, and now that they are all awake again, they will continue to do so.
Sabetha merely showed one of the other keys their group has collected in their travels and not the actual one that was stolen in Millennius.
The fact remains that the final key is still missing as far as the officials are concerned (the Doctor maintaining privately that he knows where it is).

 Marinus/Mondas: a key question - Johnny Fanboy
The Cybermen referred to the planet during its Marinus phase as Planet 14 because it was an additional planet to a system that already contained 13 worlds.
Marinus was a planet that Mondas drifted past close enough to be scanned by the Voord, who then sought to emulate its cybernetic inhabitants.
Thereafter they referred to Marinus as Planet 14 because it was the 14th planet to be formally colonised by the Cybermen.

After Keys, the only element missing from the Who mix was the invasion story, which Nation and Whitaker offered up with the same brand of twist in The Dalek Invasion of Earth.
The Keys of Marinus is a mixed serial and suffers because it's linking elements - the keys, Altos, Sabetha and the Voords - are not handled as well as some of the other elements in the individual adventures, whilst some of the individual episodes are especially weak.
The Keys Of Marinus is an interesting story that comes across as a type of prototype for stories like The Chase, and The Key To Time season.

One final point to note: following Marco Polo and The Keys of Marinus, Doctor Who would no longer be commissioned in lots of 13 episodes; the show was already proving to be a success to the extent that its' future would no longer be increased in 13 episode lots.
