The Kid (2000): Bruce Willis, Bruce+Willis, Spencer Breslin, and
While I expected an annoying chubby little kid paired with Bruce Willis, whose recent exploits in The Sixth Sense didn't impress me, the end result was a standard Disney production with the standard moral of the story combined with a little bit of fun.
The movie ran about 1 hour 50 minutes which was much longer than I thought it would (and you could tell it was running long).
Luckily the "kid" (Spencer Breslin) wasn't as annoying as I thought he would be and Bruce Willis was actually good in his role as the cynical, rich bastard.

 The Kid
The "kid" is at first an embarrassment, then an enlightenment.
Not only that, Willis had some help from a great supporting cast: the kid, Rusty (Spencer Breslin), was perfect as his alter ego; Lily Tomlin was excellent as Janet, his unflappable assistant; and the girlfriend, Amy (Emily Mortimer), was strong-willed and competent.
I've seen the 42-year-old Smart before, probably on "Designing Women." So I award two extra points to this movie, by the way: one for having as a featured player an attractive woman over 40 (a rarity); another for having a child who isn't overly bright, annoyingly disrespectful of adults, and too thin to be real.

 Andy's Anachronisms -- Disney's The Kid (2000)
From the opening credits the movie feels too earnest, with an annoyingly upbeat score that tries to heighten the mood, but only serves to overshadow the story and highlight the other shortcomings of the movie.
The time warp that brings the younger Rusty and the elder Russ together is largely left unexplored during the course of the movie, only hinted at with the mysterious appearance of a red biplane at key moments in the film.
Disney's the Kid chooses instead to hold back on the "mystery" of the time travel until very late in the movie and ultimately detracting from the other themes that it touches on.

SPLICEDwire | "The Kid" review (2000)
To make it completely clear just what a jerk the adult Russ Duritz (Willis) is, the movie begins by showing him preparing to rescue the public images of a crooked politician and a slimy baseball team owner who reneged on a promise to build a sports camp for under-privileged kids.
Welles is a cagey and facile screenwriter who draws outside the lines on her characters and sprinkles the movie with moments of '30s-style screwball comedy and poignant sincerity, like the scene in which young Rusty proposes to Amy because he figures Russ doesn't have the courage to do it himself.
While Turteltaub is pretty shameless with the movie's saccharine level and sentimental lessons-learned finale, he's also most directly responsible for keeping "The Kid's" IQ quotient respectably high.

While it’s an odd name for a movie - especially since it sounds like “Disney’s” may be a contraction for “Disney is” instead of the possessive actually used - I guess it makes sense.
Most elements of the movie are terribly syrupy; even when older Russ is touted as a serious bastard, he never seems all that rude or nasty.
This eight-minute and 20-second program showcases interview snippets with Turteltaub; these clips are interspersed with movie snippets from throughout his career, behind the scenes shots from these sets, and also a few sound bites from the actors with whom Turteltaub’s worked.

Since "The Sixth Sense" & "The Kid," a born-again human being has replaced the sullen, surly Bruce Willis who used to be dragged into promotional interview chores as if he were about to face a firing squad.
There is hope, they think, for the kid, none at all for the uptight adult.
In "The Kid," the tranformation device is sheer magic, but otherwise it operates along the same reliable principles as Chaplin's "Kid" or Herb Gardner's "Thousand Clowns." For that reason, grownups can sit through "The Kid," although not necessarily with THEIR kids, since each age group will appreciate it for entirely different reasons.

As I watched the movie, I kept wondering why Disney didn't pass this film on to Miramax - not because it's particularly daring or edgy, but because it is clearly a movie for adults.
This is exacerbated by the marketing campaign which is clearly targeting children - it is lumped in with trailers for "Rugrats the Movie", and "Pokemon 2000" (aren't they passe yet?).

Emily Mortimer plays Willis' assistant and psuedo-romantic interest (I wasn't quite certain on that point) and is very attractive, despite the fact that nobody has ever heard of her and she's been in no movies worth speaking of (and only small roles in those not-worth-speaking-of movies).
