The Killing Fields were a number of sites in Cambodia where large numbers of people were killed and buried by the Khmer Rouge communist regime which ruled the country, as Democratic Kampuchea, from 1975 to 1979.
A 1984 motion picture, The Killing Fields, depicts the events that led to and occurred during this time.
The CIA estimated that between 50,000 and 100,000 people were executed by the Khmer Rouge and that 1.2 million had died in total, mostly from starvation.

So we got our hands on a copy of The Killing Fields, a movie made in the early 80s about Cambodia's civil war, and sat down to watch it.
Having been to the actual Killing Fields, I was expecting a rather grusome Saving Private Ryan type of war movie, but I was surpised by what I saw.
If that movie had been made a year ago, it would have been filled with blood and guts, as if the special effects department just wouldn't have been able to help themselves.

The Killing Fields is a brutally honest exploration of loyalty and fidelity during the Khmer Rouge's horrific Cambodian holocaust in the mid-1970s.
This movie is obviously well-made and well-received (7 oscar nominations and 3 wins), but I found it to be too long at 141 minutes and it did not really hold my interest.
Pran is captured and sentenced to forced labor in the Killing Fields where he sees his whole family, friends and colleagues being murdered in cold blood and with no justification.

However, it is a mature and well-produced film that has a strong, compassionate core and seems to fit the times we live in as much as it fitted the times when it was first released.
The Killing Fields is a film that leaves a lasting emotional impression.
The Killing Fields is probably my favorite film of all time.

People never really got the message about Cambodia that they did about Vietnam.
Thanks to movies like The Killing Fields the story can be told, and in fine form.
Sam Waterston plays New York Times Sydney Schanberg, who's angrily covering the war from the front lines, but the film (and the Oscar, ultimately) belongs to Haing S. Ngor, who plays Dith Pran, Schanberg's Cambodian translator and assistant.
