In 1881, the 57th and the 55th, its sister Regiment, were renamed the 1st and 2nd Battalions The Border Regiment.
While not seriously challenged, the position of the 1st Border was highly precarious on the afternoon of the 28th as they were quite alone and German tanks were reported to have overtook them on either side.
In 1959, the Border Regiment was amalgamated with the Kings Own Royal Regiment, and is known to this day as the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment.

The King’s Colour was used during the latter part of the century, probably from 1786 to 1801.
The emblem of the Chinese Dragon on this standard was awarded as a Battle Honour of the 55th Regiment and worn on the Regimental Colour.
The ‘Dragon’ has been incorporated in the Colour of the Border Regiment (formed by the amalgamation of the Cumberland and Westmorland Regiments) and is now emblazoned on the colours of the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment, and worn on the regimental buttons to this day.

The hunting of the European red fox (which had spread from eastern Australia to Eucla on the state border by 1911) and the rabbit, was for the purpose of pest control as well as recreation.

The Devon and Dorset Regiment and The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment will be split up, with the Devon and Dorsets and the Glorious Glosters element of the RGBW forming a third battalion of The Light Infantry; the Berkshire and Wiltshire elements will form a third battalion of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment.
Disbanding the second battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, as advocated by supporters of the Green Howards, would have forced the remaining battalion to amalgamate with another.

The Regiment had the unique distinction of being known as "The King's Own" and of wearing the Lion of England as its cap badge.
It was shortly after this that King George I fixed the titles of many of his regiments and in a Royal Warrant of July 1715 the regiment was first officially known as the King's Own.
From the Peninsula the King's Own were sent to America and were present at the battle of BLADENSBERG in 1814 which led to the fall of Washington.

I feel as strongly as they do north of the Border, and, they and I will be delighted to welcome you on the march and rally especially since this is a UK wide rally not just confined to the Scottish Regiments campaigners.
The plan is to merge the Lancashire and Cumbrian side of the Kings Division to form a two battalion Regiment called the King's Lancashire and Border Regiment, however us, The Kings and the QLR will remain as three separate battalions until at least the end of 2005.
The Regiment, who was present in the capture of the rock in 1704, was honoured by being invited to take part in the Guard Mounting Ceremony at the Convent - the Residence of the Governor.

This was the last time the regiment was together as a regiment for nearly ten months; this was because the regiment was being split up into three camps.
My own company which was “S” had only a month prior to embarkation, been turned from a Support company into a rifle company for the duration of the stay in the Cameroons.
Considering the regiment was spread out over the 250 miles, on hindsight they did a fine job in helping to bring peace and stability in the Cameroons.

I agree that the loss of these regiments is a travesty, and if we could only force labour to increase defence spending, they could perhaps have been preserved in the way the other historic battalions will be.

 51 Far North Queensland Regiment
In 1950, the 51st Battalion Far North Queensland Regiment was presented its first King's and Regimental Colours incorporating the Battle Honours of all of its predecessor Battalions In June 1951, nine members of the 51st Battalion represented the unit at the Jubilee Celebrations at Canberra.
On its reformation in 1985, the 51st Battalion Far North Queensland Regiment adopted the colour patch of the original 51st Battalion AIF and the badge and motto of the original 51st Battalion Far North Queensland Regiment; the new badge being surmounted by the Queen's crown instead of the King's crown of the original.
During the British Army reorganisation of 1960 - 61, The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry ceased to exist as an entity and was absorbed onto the Light Division which, in 1987, was located in a new barracks, The Sir John Moore Barracks, at Hants, England, as a composite Regular Army/Territorial Army Division.

The Bamenda region was very hilly with valleys infested with bamboo thickets and patrols were mostly on the border regions of the British and French Cameroons.

 The Regimental Memorial Chapel
The King's Own Regimental Memorial Chapel in Lancaster Priory was constructed in 1903 - 1904 in memory of the members of the King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment who lost their lives in the South African (Boer) War 1899 - 1902.
The existing North Nave wall was moved outwards and the Chapel separated from the Nave by an open wooden screen.
Members of the Regiment take part in the annual Service of Remembrance held in the Priory on the Sunday nearest to November 11th.
