Book Review - The Ha-Ha by Dave King
Dave King avoids this schtick and does an extraordinary job of making all the characters flawed and realistic and their reactions to their situation are tender, anguished, and brutal at times.
This has the potential for a movie-of-the-week sentimentality; grizzled veteran brings precocious boy into his household, and despite a few setbacks, they form a sweet family bond and everyone is all smiles by the end.
All this makes Howard an unlikely narrator for any novel, but in Dave King's The Ha-Ha, Howard is a complex, damaged, and all too human man who you won't be able to forget long after you've finished this novel.

The Seattle Times: Pop music & nightlife: Carole King's oldies are goodies for Seattle crowd
Throughout the night, King stumped for environmental issues and encouraged the crowd to vote "whatever your party," but it was listening to that distinctively gravelly and still clear voice belting out the oldies that brought smiles to faces and had everyone singing along.
King joked about being part of a "fantasy wall of guitars, just like the Eagles," and the enthusiastic spirit of the musicians and infectious beat made listeners forget they were listening to a somewhat silly pop tune.
King, Guess and Burr took to their guitars to play "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me," a Burr-written track made famous by pop-country singer Juice Newton in the 1980s.

 THE KING OF CAKE
Such simplicity: hands across the ocean, thousands of people - complete strangers, united only through their love of cake and only the vaguest knowledge of computers- sharing recipes, cheeky tips, languid glances, open smiles and walking hand-in-hand towards Cakeland - the promised land.....if you are good and fine, I will take you there too......
Sure, I knew that the title of 'King of Cake' was something to do with carnival, but I thought it was in the medievel-rotten teeth-witch-dunking-lots-of-pigs-mooching-around sense, not as in New-Orleans-Mardi-Gras-boobs-on-balconies-lots-of-beads-and-gumbo (do they have gumbo at Mardi Gras?
