Had The King of Comedy been made in 1993 instead of 1983, it would have fared much better at the box office and would be ranked more highly in Scorsese's canon.

Happily, The King of Comedy is presented on DVD in an anamorphic transfer at its theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1.

The King of Comedy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The King of Comedy is a wholly original and entirely offbeat, dark comedy about fame, obsessive fandom, and the medium from which they both feed: television.
And while King, made in 1983, does appear slightly dated, Scorsese's first film after Raging Bull and perhaps most underappreciated work (or at least a close second to The Last Temptation of Christ) deserves to be seen.
King is better, in my opinion, than Scorsese's other foray into “dark” comedy, After Hours, although the two films do share a certain senseof indescribable paranoia and uneasiness, not only as thematic elements but also in the process of viewing them.

That's the question brought to mind in The King of Comedy, the fifth motion picture collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro.
The film has enough unique and interesting elements to stand on its own, but it's hard to ignore the fact that the movie is attempting to tread much of the same ground that the pair had covered in Taxi Driver a few years earlier.
Not one of Martin Scorsese's strongest pictures, The King of Comedy nonetheless has plenty of interesting elements that make it worth watching at least once.

The film was released in 1983, in the wake of the assassination of John Lennon by a crazed fan and the attempt on President Reagan's life by a deranged admirer of "Taxi Driver" star Jodie Foster.
"King" is Scorsese's answer to the politicians and cultural critics who blamed "Taxi Driver" for "causing" the Reagan assassination attempt.
What prevents "King" from being a filmmaker's elitist rant about keeping the little people in their place is that Scorsese and Zimmerman want us to feel some sympathy for Rupert's pathetic misunderstanding of the order of things.

King Of Comedy, The: DVD details by TYS
The first of two rare endeavors in the field of full-out, fl comedy for iconic filmmaker Martin Scorsese, “The King Of Comedy” was not received well by audiences in the early eighties.
He remembers watching “Entertainment Tonight” and hearing them call it “the flop of the year.” Fortunately, it didn’t stop him from making “After Hours” (another fl comedy, a personal favourite, and yet to arrive on DVD), which was met with critical acclaim and overall a success.
Since then, Scorsese has stuck to more serious fare, but now that “King” has had a chance to ferment, it’s found its audience at home, and is highly regarded by many as a brilliant comedy.

The King of Comedy review (1983) Martin Scorsese - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
The King of Comedy isn't so much a comedy in the traditional sense, although it might be classified as a twisted, and quite tragic, comedy of errors.
In the case of The King of Comedy, Rupert Pupkin (De Niro, Taxi Driver) is a prime example of this aspect of celebrity worship.
"Better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime", Pupkin remarks as part of his act, which goes to show the mentality of the modern culture to get themselves seen and heard on television, film, or radio in any way possible.

THE KING OF COMEDY - DVD
Scorsese has said that he wanted to do The King of Comedy in the style of Edwin S. Porter, a filmmaker from the pre-Griffith silent era, before a cinematic vocabulary had made itself evident.
Excerpted therein but also receiving their own section are two deleted scenes: one finds Langford greeting more fans at a crosswalk, the other Langford delivering a monologue to his televised audience that I suspect was cut because it's an act as opposed to the sort of current-affairs riffing one encounters on a late-night talk show.

The DVD Journal | Reviews : The King of Comedy
The King of Comedy is not so much a departure from the likes of Taxi Driver as it is a different (and funnier) look at the same sad isolations and desperations present in the director's earlier work.
Although The King of Comedy features the bright and inviting aesthetics of a typical comedy, the movie's laughs are equaled if not outweighed by simultaneous cringes of pain.
The King of Comedy looks great on Fox's DVD edition in a pretty clean anamorphic transfer (1.85:1) with only a few flecks of source wear, and it sounds fine in both the Dolby 2.0 Surround and DD mono audio mixes.

The King of Comedy doesn’t seem to be as well known as some of Scorsese and De Niro’s other collaborations (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and four others), but it’s surely worth seeing nonetheless.
The Bottom Line is that King of Comedy is a movie well deserving of the title “classic.” De Niro and Scorsese are great in this superb fl comedy and satire.
