Martin Scorsese’s 1983 flick The King of Comedy didn’t delve into such murderous tendencies, but it took a look at the nature of those obsessed with fame.
Scorsese nicely balances the scary elements with comedy, and Pupkin proves to be an interesting character for De Niro.
The King of Comedy appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

When Martin Scorsese's "The King of Comedy" was finally released in 1983 (it was completed in 1981), the film was a resounding flop, but since then it has grown to become something of a minor Scorsese masterpiece.
Until this DVD release by 20th Century Fox Home Video, "The King of Comedy" was consigned to the netherworld of lousy transfers, but now, for the first time, it is presented in excellent condition in its original anamorphic widescreen ration of 1.85:1.
Along with Woody Allen's "Zelig" and Stephen Sondheim's "Assassins," "The King of Comedy" skewers the cult of celebrity with a tart uneasiness.

Martin Scorsese's The King Of Comedy is a funny depiction of the dangers of celebrity fandom.
There are practically no jokes in "The King of Comedy" (except the ones De Niro and Jerry Lewis let off during their stand-up acts, but that's a comedy within a comedy) but this film is just killing.

The King of Comedy isn't so much a comedy in the traditional sense, although it might be classified as a twisted, and quite tragic, comedy of errors.
In the case of The King of Comedy, Rupert Pupkin (De Niro, Taxi Driver) is a prime example of this aspect of celebrity worship.
"Better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime", Pupkin remarks as part of his act, which goes to show the mentality of the modern culture to get themselves seen and heard on television, film, or radio in any way possible.

Scorsese recalls with chagrin that as he was preparing to go out on New Year’s Eve in 1983, he caught an Entertainment Tonight tidbit that proclaimed The King of Comedy "the flop of the year." What prevents "King" from being a filmmaker's elitist rant about keeping the little people in their place is that Scorsese and Zimmerman want us to feel some sympathy for Rupert's pathetic misunderstanding of the order of things.

Gone is the heavy grain of the VHS and televised versions, which especially benefits a low-light encounter between Langford and Masha late in the picture.
Excerpted therein but also receiving their own section are two deleted scenes: one finds Langford greeting more fans at a crosswalk, the other Langford delivering a monologue to his televised audience that I suspect was cut because it's an act as opposed to the sort of current-affairs riffing one encounters on a late-night talk show.

Other memorable romantic comedies of the 1950s include George Cukor's Born Yesterday (1950) about the tutoring of a racketeer's uneducated girlfriend (Judy Holliday), and director Vincente Minnelli's family wedding comedy Father of the Bride (1950) starring Spencer Tracy as the "father of bride" Elizabeth Taylor.
Sexual comedies were successively enhanced by the appearance of Marilyn Monroe at her prime in The Seven Year Itch (1955) as a Manhattan apartment dweller, and as the lead singer in an all-girls band in director/co-writer Billy Wilder's hilarious and subversive adult comedy
Screen comedies declined in number and quality in the 1950s, contributing to the rise of TV situation comedies ('sitcoms') and variety shows, and stand-up comedy routines/sketches.

At the time she was a manicurist to the stars, a vocation she practiced for six years before her comedy stylings enabled her to give up her day job for good.
She had made her feature debut in "Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams" (19981), but it was her over-the-top turn as the obsessively neurotic groupie who attempts to kidnap Jerry Lewis in Martin Scorsese's "The King of Comedy" (1983) that brought her to public prominence.
A regular performer on TV stand-up comedy specials, she ventured into the land of sitcoms with a six-year (1991-96) recurring role as a married woman who came out as a lesbian on the hit ABC sitcom "Roseanne", offering perhaps her most mainstream exposure to date.

As Travis Bickle's universally known line of dialogue from "Taxi Driver" has a deep meaning ("Are you talkin' to me? Well I'm the only one here"), Rupert Pupkin's closing speech of his first-ever standup comedy routine in "The King of Comedy" finalizes the entire meaning of the film, wrapping it up in one short sentence.
Lewis has lost his manic, energetic, annoying comedy rituals seen in films such as "The Nutty Professor" and has moved on to real acting that demands true skill.
He commands that he will be referenced to as "The King of Comedy" (hence the title), and to further demonstrate the innocence of Rupert's character, when he shows up, he fails to see the gravity of the offence he has just committed.

This uncertain blend of satire and dead-on seriousness is one of Martin Scorsese's few forays into comedy, and he made it in reaction to John Hinkley Jr.'s obsession with Scorsese's Taxi Driver.
I say it is an uncertain blend because, even during the "funny" moments, there is an underlying bitterness that makes them all the more uncomfortable.
However, when compiling a top ten films of 1983, I didn't think twice about putting it at the top.

With two later films, RAGING BULL (1980) and THE KING OF COMEDY (1983) (both starring De Niro), Scorsese focused on a theme that has permeated nearly every one of his movies—the plight of the desperate and out-of-control individual.
With the protagonist in RAGING BULL we find a fighter possessed with anger both in and out of the ring, while in THE KING OF COMEDY we find one overwhelmed by the impossibility of breaking into the entertainment industry.
For many, Martin Scorsese is the most important living American filmmaker—one whose relentless search for the furthest emotional reaches of his genre have led him to the center of the American psyche.
