Here's his most unusual legal thriller yet--a story whose hero and villain are the same, a young man with the tragic flaw of greed; a story whose suspense arises not from physical threat but moral turmoil, and one that launches a devastating assault on a group of the author's colleagues within the law.
Mass tort lawyers are Grisham's target, the men (they're all men here, at least) who win billion-dollar class-action settlements from corporations selling bad products, then rake fantastic fees off the top, with far smaller payouts going to the people harmed by the products.
Mass torts are when a large group of consumers bring action against a corporation for a faulty product.

King of Torts is decidedly of that latter group, following the path established by novels such as The Firm and Rainmaker.
In a work of fiction that could easily serve as a white paper for tort reform, Grisham’s attorneys devote far more time and energy to their Lamborghinis and trophy wives than to the people they claim to represent.
In short, The King of Torts comprises an unbelievable and unsympathetic protagonist and stereotypical cast of supporting characters, and a plot that concludes with a whimper instead of a bang.

THE KING OF TORTS is the Faustian tale of Carter's meteoric rise to the top of the field of mass tort litigation.
The major character in THE KING OF TORTS is not Clay Carter.
THE KING OF TORTS is a prime example of the adage that, in novels, "Plot trumps the truth." In order to make the novel work, Grisham must compress a great deal of action into a short amount of time.

'The King of Torts' by John Grisham
In his 15th novel, he tackles the world of mass torts, where lawyers troll for clients who may have been wronged -- by a faulty drug, for instance -- and sue the manufacturer and make millions in the process.
"The King of Torts" is a Washington, D.C., lawyer named Clay Carter, although he hasn't earned that sobriquet in the first chapter.
"The King of Torts" has many of the Grisham touchstones or, perhaps, crutches: private planes, secret accounts, Caribbean getaways, the perils and isolation of sudden wealth and, ultimately, the desire to escape to a place where nobody knows your name.

Wie von Grisham gewohnt, ist auch „The King of Torts" sehr flüssig geschrieben und lässt sich leicht und relativ schnell lesen.
Grisham is back on his told turf, the world of lawyers and how despicable lawyers can be, at least when they deal with torts as the basis of their business.
It all starts out with a young innocent lawyer pulled into the greedy world of torts litigation, lawyers who make 40% of what they get as a settlement from companies putting faulty products on the market.

What makes THE KING OF TORTS so good is the conceptual elements fans have grown to love about Grisham's thirllers: an underdog young attorney, a mysterious and clandestine protagonist, greasy "ambulance-chasing" attorneys and unscrupulous corporations.
The only problem I saw with THE KING OF TORTS is, having set up strong characters and revealed the conspiracy, Grisham spins the story to a condensed close.
The King of Torts by John Grisham is an average novel by his standards, probably above average by most other authors standards.

In the late 1990s, while Miers was on the advisory board for Southern Methodist University's law school, she helped create and fund a Women's Studies lecture series named after pioneering Texas lawyer, Louise B. Raggio, who was a mentor to Miers (see [6]).
In the summer of 1969, between her second and third years of law school, Miers worked as a clerk for Belli, Ashe, Ellison, Choulos and Lieff, the San Francisco law firm founded by "King of Torts", the late eccentric attorney, Melvin Belli (see [7]).
After graduating from law school, from 1970 to 1972, Miers was a law clerk for the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Joe E. Estes.

Grisham again goes after greedy tort lawyers who accumulate enormous fees in class-action settlements against corporations, with hardly anything left for the corporations' actual victims.
In this novel, lawyer Clay Carter is offered a role in the case of a teenager who has shot and killed a fellow student after taking a drug that has been suspected of causing similar psychotic episodes.
Offered a small fortune by the pharmaceutical company in question, Clay succumbs to greed and rises to his dubious position as "king of torts"--losing his moral fiber and the woman he loves in the process.
