Nevertheless, the Kinks are considered to be one of the greatest and most influential British Invasion Mod acts and together with The Who and The Small Faces, they defined the Mod movement in the music of the 60s and 70s.
For four years, the Kinks were prohibited from returning to the U.S., which not only meant that the group was deprived of the world's largest music market, but that they were effectively cut off from the musical and social upheavals of the late 60s.
Released in the late fall of 1968, this concept album was the culmination of Davies' nostalgic tendencies.

While the album was unsuccessful, it was well-received by critics, particularly in the U.S. Peter Quaife soon grew tired of the band's lack of success, and he left the band by the end of the year, being replaced by John Dalton.
Instead of breaking up, the Kinks merely reshuffled their lineup, but there was a major casualty: Mick Avory, the band's drummer for 20 years, was fired and replaced by Bob Henrit.
The Kinks were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, but the induction did not help revive their career.

Two albums that yes, are favourite Kinks albums of mine, but you wouldn't have wished for a third album in that style straight away.

VILLAGE GREEN was one of the last albums they released before the ban was lifted and the album's failure in the states definitely hurt.
The Kinks were remembered for their singles during the British Invasion but during the latter part of the sixties, they created an impressive catalog of albums from Something Else to Village Green to Arthur to Lola.
Perhaps the Kinks were considered too British as compared to the Who,Stones, and the Beatles but it is the Kinks who set the stage for Oasis and many other British bands.

Often, however, there are albums that are simply unnoticed because they pale in comparison to the group’s strongest efforts and came at a time in their career that lacked much relevance.
While largely forgettable, there are some excellent songs on the album, including the lead-off track “Life on the Road,” which may be interpreted as a self-described ode to Ray Davies’ devotion to touring with The Kinks, and “Sleepwalker,” which is something of a vampire song.
This album is probably not going to change your whole view on music like the onset of grunge or a rockin' Led Zeppelin LP, but it would fit oh so snuggly in a hip indie film or in a coffee shop to create that cozy ambiance.

In scouring the Kinks' site tonight, I learned the terrible news that lead Kink Ray Davies was shot in the thigh during an attempted robbery in New Orleans in January, and now he's back in the hospital because he's not healing properly.
Eventually, I found a copy of the Kinks' original 1967 "Greatest Hits" package (what the hell is "Wait til the Summer Comes Along" doing there?), and as a measure of my great devotion to my best friend at the time, I gave him the LP for his birthday.
The Kinks traveled to the Twin Cities (can't remember if it was Minneapolis or St. Paul) to grace our shores with their distinctive British presence, and I bought a ticket as fast I could locate one.

I first paid attention to The Kinks in 1967 due to an article in the old, original `Crawdaddy' magazine which was the big pre-Rolling Stone journal of choice for discriminating writing on contemporary rock.
My first album was a very foolish purchase of a Live album where one could barely hear the band over the screams of the Beatlemania-infected audience of young girls.
The most interesting aspect of that particular album was The Kinks performing the theme to the Batman TV series popular at the time.

With the continuing decomposition of the talents of The Kinks' lead man Ray Davies, as evidenced on "One for the Road," "Give the People What They Want" and "State of Confusion," it seemed that the band was destined to fade into the sunset as they moved into their middle years.
On "Sold Me Out," drummer Mick Avory gives one of only three performances on this album; on the other tracks, the longtime Kinks veteran is replaced by newcomer Bob Henrit.
"Word of Mouth" is a great album – The Kinks are rocking with a hard beat and are once again willing to take on social issues in their songs.
