The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society is a pop-rock album released by the British music group The Kinks on November 22, 1968.
The album theme was inspired by a track recorded by the band in November 1966, "Village Green", which was inspired by the Kinks' performances near rustic Devon, England in late 1966 (Davies has also stated that Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood was an indirect inspiration for the concept).
With the exception of true orchestral backing on the early "Village Green" track, the string and woodwind backings on such tracks as "Animal Farm", "Days", "Starstruck", and "Phenomenal Cat" were simulated by the Mellotron, played by both Hopkins and Ray Davies.

God Bless The Kinks, they faced success and failure with such grace (at least on the outside) that when their masterpiece flopped with the public they just shrugged their shoulders and soldiered on.
That's because, as was often the case with The Kinks, it was.
"Village Green" preceded the move back to the pastoral sounds and eagerness to recapture the innocence of the past by about twenty years.

BBC - Classic Rock/Pop Review - The Kinks, ...Are The Village Green Preservation Society
The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society flopped big-time.
Village Green had a tortuous history from recording to release - all brilliantly explained in the extensive sleeve notes and the book of the album (published by Continuum), both by Kinks scholar Andy Miller.
"Village Green" is full of moments like that, and it (and Ray Davies) should be cherished for that.

 The Kinks
The Kinks continue their classic period with The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society, which is a 'concept' album about tudor houses, china cups, vaudeville, strawberry jam, and other British subjects.
Never would the Kinks go so far away from their roots as they did here, a time when their live shows would be like a big play, and things such as mulitcolored afros would be worn by all the band members.
The Kinks continue with the arena rock formula on their 20th studio album (in almost twenty years), which probably has one of the corniest album covers of the Kinks whole career.

Kinks Kontroversy was the first step, and Face to Face was the breakthrough.
Working in such physical and creative isolation, The Kinks most sophisticated songs to date emerged rough-hewn, and both the mono and stereo mixes of the album (available together on the Castle CD reissue) sound remarkably lo-fi, and all the more lively for it.
And no Kinks record captures that better than The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society.

I certainly love the Kinks; it's been fifteen months since I've had a new Kinks album in my hourse, and though I've been listening to them I've missed that pleasure.
Bob played The Village Green Preservation Society for me when he bought a British copy, about a month ago, and I've played it twice since it arrived here this afternoon, and already the songs are slipping into my mind, each new hearing is a combined joy of renewal and discovery.
And when texture is beautiful, as it always is with Maurcice Sendak, as it is in the gatefold photo of the Kinks on this new album, as of course it is in all (even despairing) Kinks music, it's an affirmation in itself, just for things to feel this fine is enough for now.

This was a golden age for British albums and this may have meant that The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society was released around the same time as Electric Ladyland, The White Album and Beggar's Banquet.
This is particularly evident in The Village Green Preservation Society and Last of the Steam Powered Trains (1968 was the year that the last steam-powered locomotives were in regular service in the UK).

Although it was completely ignored upon its 1968 release, Village Green Preservation Society has earned its place among the other masterpieces of 60s rock, and although it doesn't contain any big hits (although "Picture Book" is now being use for camera commercials), it's the Kinks' finest album.
Village Green is Ray Davies' love letter to his childhood, full of gentle nostalgia and bittersweet reunions.
Of course, Village Green is also full of the Kinks' best melodic moments, making this their greatest album statement.

The Kinks' The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (Thirty Three and a Third series) by Andy Miller
The Kinks were working in their own homey little world, as evidenced by songs such as the album's title track, "Picture Book", about family snapshot albums, and "All of My Friends Were There" whose very un-rebellious subject is public embarrassment.
The overarching theme of VILLAGE GREEN is that ofunalloyed nostalgia--it's only today, now that many of the things Davies feared would disappear have actually vanished, that the truth and clarity of his vision is apparent.

On the one hand, the mesh of cclattering drums and electric guitar never threatens to overwhelm the melody; on the other, the gossamer-light harmonies, Ray and Dave's vocal line traced by Rasa Davies' wordless falsetto, are bursting with emotion.
Ignored by virtually everyone upon its release in November 1968, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society is now seen as one of the best British albums ever recorded.
Here, Andy Miller traces the perilous circumstances surrounding its creation, and celebrates the timeless, perfectly crafted songs pieced together by a band who were on the verge of disintegration and who refused to follow fashion.

The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society: read reviews
The Kinks having passed their proto-punk phase ("You Really Got Me", "All Day and all of the Night",) entered their classic phase lyrically and though left behind at the time, created their masterpiece which years later would reverberate through the musical world.
Once the punk scene had passed and it became okay to be melodic again (The Smiths, The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry") the Kink's most lyrical phase of which "Village Green" is the culmination would be unearthed.
Instead "Village Green" takes a look at the disappearing traditions of English life and pays hommage to them with more substantial lyrics than the Zombies or the desperately maudlin Small Faces.

THE KINKS / THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY
That man was the genteel, smarmy-charmy Ray Davies, who in the Kinks' jaunty songs pined intensely for the romanticized, storybook Merry Olde England of his boyhood.
In his professional life, an injunction on the Kinks from touring America from 1965-69 had greatly damaged their once-skyrocketing career; on the personal side, Ray had accidentally impregnated his barely-legal immigrant girlfriend, resulting in their hasty shotgun marriage (that's how it was done in those days).
The U.S. touring ban had also isolated the Kinks from the rock music world's largest market—a country that exercised a larger influence on international pop culture than almost all other nations combined—so it was inevitable that he became more introspective, more wistful, and definitely more English.

If one defines success exclusively in record sales, then THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY was a decided failure, registering the poorest sales of any of their albums to date, but on critical grounds it is in the opinion of many the finest album they ever released.
The sales failure of VILLAGE GREEN partly lies in the fact that the Kinks could not for some undiscovered reason obtain visas to tour the United States during several years in the sixties.
VILLAGE GREEN was one of the last albums they released before the ban was lifted and the album's failure in the states definitely hurt.

Although they weren't as boldly innovative as the Beatles or as popular as the Rolling Stones or the Who, the Kinks were one of the most influential bands of the British Invasion.
Within four years, the band had become the most staunchly English of all their contemporaries, drawing heavily from British music hall and traditional pop, as well as incorporating elements of country, folk, and blues.
Throughout their long, varied career, the core of the Kinks remained Ray (b.

The Kinks have contributed mightily to the Jolly Old England image in a strange way: Their album, The Village Green Preservation Society not only celebrates the image; it mourns its passing.
These are snatches of memories, flashes of recognition (of a life none of us have ever lived), ideals of a time and place most of us have dreamed of at one time or another.
All things considered, Village Green Preservation Society is the strongest of the late-'60s "psychedelic" albums.
