The Knitters formed in the early '80s for the specific purpose of playing benefits.
The Knitters' traditional country stylings surprised many punk purists, but given the diversity of the L.A. scene when X and the Blasters were emerging, it was a fairly obvious evolution.
Some time ago, Cervenka lamented to a music critic that, at the time of the Knitters' arrival -- in the midst of the unfortunately christened "cow-punk" movement -- a lot of listeners probably thought they were making fun of country music.

The reality is that the Knitters are one heck of an American roots band.
The Knitters are much more than X minus Billy Zoom plus Bartel, even though the personnel is pretty much the same as the raging punk band that helped define '80s rock.
Of course, there's plenty for X fans to appreciate on the Knitters' record, as there is nothing as distinct and combustible as the Doe/Cervenka vocal dynamic.

Calling themselves the Knitters, the group tackled classics by legends like the Carter Family, Merle Haggard, the Delmore Brothers, and Leadbelly, as well as new tunes penned by Alvin and X's John Doe and Exene Cervenka.
All across the country, the Knitters sent X fans off to scour thrift stores for old country, folk, and blues.
The Knitters are planning to regroup for a couple of benefits to honor the release of the tribute album.

From the rich, supple baritone that was only hinted at during X’s heyday to the wicked sense of fun of "The Call of the Wreckin’ Ball," the Knitters frontman has still got it going on.
Of course, he was in good company a week ago Wednesday, joined on vocals by X mates Exene Cervenka and drummer D.J. Bonebrake, along with guitarist (also Blasters co-founder and one-time X guitarist) Dave Alvin and Jonny Ray Bartel on acoustic bass.
X always had their roots in hardcore hillbilly, the despair and the twang of the heartland, and the original Knitters gigs only mined what was already common ground.

In essence, the recently released "Poor Little Knitter on the Road: A Tribute to the Knitters" is a tribute to a tribute band, but it's also a labor of love.
The original Knitters record was by no means a crowning achievement for any of the musicians involved; it was a tossed-off collection of mostly re-worked X tunes and assorted covers, a few of which the band failed to treat with reverence.
Cervenka was an indomitable presence in both the Knitters and X. Her deep coyote whine is and was unmistakable.

The Knitters, therefore, are one of a handful of bands to be honored with a tribute after only one album, and the irony doesn't escape Doe.
As with X, the music of the Knitters benefits from the inventive harmonies and call-and-response vocals of Doe and Cervenka, one of the most pleasurable singing duos in the last 30 years of popular music.

 The Knitters - Rockabilly Central
The Knitters, a revered country side project started by members of Los Angeles punks X and rockabilly revivalists the Blasters, are back.
In late 1984, three of the four members of X — Cervenkova (born Christine Cervenka), 43; singer/songwriter/bassist John Doe, 46; and drummer D.J. Bonebrake, 43 — thought it might be fun to cover a few of their favorite country songs as a side project for benefit shows.
The Knitters were a country side project of singer Exene Cervenka, bassist John Doe, drummer D.J. Bonebrake and guitarist/songwriter Dave Alvin (ex-Blasters) — all former members of legendary punk band X — and Johnny Ray Bartel (Mike Ness).

In the spirit of setting the record straight, it should be noted that altruism wasn't the primary intention behind the benefit concerts that kick started the Knitters back in the day.
In addition to a crack rhythm section and Alvin's razor-sharp guitar playing, what distinguished the Knitters' sound were the vocal harmonies Doe and Cervenka carried over from X.
As time went on, like, with maybe the fourth record that X made, and by the time the Knitters were born, we had all listened to more roots and country music and knew how to create that sound with the harmonies and playing.

Granted, fame and fortune were never intended for the Knitters, whose members' legacies are secured thanks to their work with better-known bands.
Really, the Knitters are in a tough conceptual spot revisiting their other incarnation's tunes: either they pick a song that worked for X but is Knitters-appropriate, or they pick one that isn't, but is also an unimpeachable, unstoppable X classic.

In 1986, Dave left the Blasters to join X. Since the Knitters were made up of Dave Alvin and members of X, it was no longer a side project so they used the name X. Dave went on to a solo career and in 1991 the Knitters did a reunion tour for fun.

Performing to a hometown audaud, the Knitters had an easygoing, affectionate camaraderie that could be heard in the music's lived-in, informal ease; here's hoping it won't be another 20 years before they return.
