The Knobz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Knobz were fairly typical of the New Zealand pop scene in the 1980s; they were described in an article of the time as "XTC meets The Knack".
The Knobz dispersed at the end of 1981, with some of the members moving on to other projects; most notably, drummer Bob Reid went on to play for the powerhouse Sydney band The Sharks.
In their heyday, The Knobz can be said to have epitomised the early 80s period when punk still held a slender audience and New Romantic music was starting to make an impact.

The Knobz: Definition and Links by Encyclopedian.com - All about The Knobz
The Knobz, (pronounced nobs; as in "what a bunch of nobs", referring to "a group of dickheads") were a significant New Zealand pop band.
They were made famous with their political song dissing Robert Mouldoon[?], who was Prime Minister at the time, whom said that New Zealand's Pop music wasn't part of the New Zealand culture.
The Knobz proved him wrong with their flowing melodies and annoying cheesy riffs, and turned the New Zealand Pop fanatic into a culturally sensitive citizen.

Culture of New Zealand - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
This has led to protests from those who believe that there is a uniquely definable New Zealand culture.
Perhaps one of the more memorable protests was the 1980 song "Culture" by The Knobz after outspoken Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon stated that New Zealand pop music was not part of the New Zealand cultural scene.
New Zealand culture has been likened to Australian culture because it bears many similarities and the two nations have much in common.

The limited edition 78 tracker includes just about a little bit of everybody that was anybody, or anybody who knew somebody with a tape recorder in Dunedin's music scene from the late 50's to recent times.
Disc two is a 22 track FLYING NUN primer complete with the odd live or rare track for those avid followers of The Dunedin Sound, while the third part shows the mixture of consolidation, diversification and emigration of Otago's current musical climate.
If the first CD could be summarised as early Dunedin and the third contemporary Dunedin the second should be classic Dunedin, the period of feverish alternative strummings and fl jerseys that put Dunedin on the international music atlas in the 1980's.

Sal is one of the true veterans in the group, having played around the valley for more than 25 years.
His credits (too many to list all) include the Wallace and Ladmo Show, Power Trio groups Knobz, and Kens, and blues group Lynna McCarter.
The groups song style crosses many genres, but might be described as southern rock/blues with a unique guitar driven twist that never fails to fill the dance floor.
