Brighton's The Kooks are that rarest of pop entities: a scuzzy, fresh-faced group to fully restore your faith in the holy grail of English singer-songwriting stretching from Supergrass via (early) Blur to The Kinks and beyond.

After one listen to the debut album from Brighton’s The Kooks, it becomes sadly apparent just how much fun the non-lobotomized portion of the population has been missing the last several years.
The Kooks then careen into the euphoric Brit-pop confection, “Eddie’s Gun”;, which surely must’ve been a demo swiped from under Gaz Coombes’ bed circa 1994.
The Kooks, for all their rambunctious spirit, slow the breakneck pace ever-so-slightly as the album moves into its second half, loosening the arrangements and giving the guitars space to breathe.

The word "kook" was coined by the beatniks, as a pared-down version of "cuckoo," as in "going cuckoo." A kook is a person stigmatized by virtue of outlandish, extreme or socially unacceptable beliefs that underpin their entire existence.
Being assigned kook status is inherently a matter of perspective, relative to history and culture.
However, it's possible that "kook as crackpot" and "kook as inexperienced surfer" are two entirely separate and independent uses of the word.
