TNMC Movies: Club Reviews: The Ladies Man
The Ladies Man falls into that wonderfully entertaining, yet rarely reached, category of films that we here at the club like to refer to as "brilliantly bad." The Ladies Man makes no apologies for this, in fact it revels in the glory of being a completely tasteless movie.
In all cases Lorne Michaels is trying to convert a five minute sketch piece that already may or may not be very funny and stretch it into a 90 minute film that somehow has a cohesive plot.
So we get a young African American man struggling with his identity and trying to overcome his own personal limitations to find out who he truly is…and do it up da butt with as many high class bus stop skanks as he possibly can, and in the meantime look for love.

Perhaps Lorne Michaels conceived this film as "satire," but the KKK could probably recruit new trainees with his image of the fl man (represented by long suffering and unfunny SNL cast member Tim Meadows) as semiretarded, idiotically grinning, massively endowed, large afroed seducer of mostly married white women.
The only laughs to be had here are based on the sheer absurdity of the idea that no one involved ever seemed to realize just what a horrible film they were making.
Easily the worst and most misguided major studio release of the year -- beating out Battlefield Earth, which at least had a lunatic charm that made it strangely appealing -- The Ladies Man is a disaster on every level.

TheMovieBoy Review: The Ladies Man (2000)
Of their three most recent stabs at big-screen stardom, this year's "The Ladies Man," based on the exploits of shallow womanizer Leon Phelps, is, by far, the worst of the lot.
All the while, a disgruntled man (Lee Evans) who caught his wife sleeping with Leon, joins a support group for husbands whose wives' have cheated on them with the mysterious fl man with the smiley-face tattooed on his buttocks.
It's difficult to imagine SNL ever being able to feature this character on their show any longer, since the turning point for the character is one that defies his personality and loose attitude seen on the show.

Sure, it's a really, really dumb movie, and Tim Meadows' Saturday Night Live character Leon Phelps, aka The Ladies' Man, is stretched just about as far as he can be without snapping, but there are laughs to be found here, and the film really isn't as raunchy as you might think.

Based on his lisping "Ladies Man" character, Meadows plays Leon Phelps, a late-night sex advice host of a radio show who gets fired for racking up one too many FCC fines.
The under-appreciated, extremely talented Tim Meadows finally got his moment in the big screen spotlight with 2000's "The Ladies Man." The film may not have been a commercial hit, but in terms of delivering good-hearted, somewhat risque laughs, it's a huge success.
Naturally, Tim plays Leon Phelps, his popular Saturday Night Live character aptly dubbed, "The Ladies' Man." Perhaps to avoid repetition from earlier SNL theatrical outings, in the movie Leon is made the host of a radio call-in show, rather than a television show as in the well-known Saturday Night Live skits.

SPLICEDwire | "The Ladies Man" review (2000)
It's been eight years since a "Saturday Night Live" skit spawned a feature film that wasn't an outright embarrassment -- but while "Ladies Man," the latest of the bunch, is no "Wayne's World," it has more and better laughs than "Superstar," "A Night at the Roxybury" and "Coneheads" combined.
As a shameless paramour who brags that he's had every kind of woman "from the loneliest bus station skank to the most high-society debutante bus station skank," Meadows doesn't ham through this half-wit role, but lets the satire wash over him.
He's made an effort to develop his character and he's not chewing scenery, which is exactly why "The Ladies Man" is more like "Wayne's World" than the rest of its "SNL" movie brethren.
