She shows up at his parents' home in Connecticut as the Lady Eve Sidwich ; impossibly, and only in the movies, Pike refuses to believe that Jean and Eve are the same woman.
(The only difference is that as Eve, Stanwyck's hair is pinned up and she uses a fairly unconvincing English accent.) I won't give away any more of the plot, but you can be safely assured that, as in any great screwball comedy, all's well that ends well.
But her performance as Eve is almost the comic twin of Phyllis Dietrichson in Double Indemnity ; she's smart and sexy and an operator, she's always a step ahead of her man, but there's a whole lot more than just ice water pulsing through her veins.

Part of this may be due to a general darkening of the national mood, with World War II looming on the horizon, but it almost feels like a natural progression for the genre, as if the cynicism that always lay at its heart had curdled and begun to overwhelm the fizzy sweetness.
The Lady Eve is neatly divided into two halves, both dealing with the theme of honesty and deceit in relationships between men (as represented by Henry Fonda) and women (as represented by Barbara Stanwyck).
The second act, then, is the more intriguing, as Jean swans blithely back into Fonda’s midst, posing as the Lady Eve Sidwich, with absolutely no attempt to disguise herself aside from her clipped English accent.
