The Ladykillers is a darkly comic chamber piece about a grotesque gang of criminals entangled with an imperturbably eccentric old lady played by 87 year old Katie Johnson.
He was given a smaller part, (and he voices the parrot) but when 40 minutes of the film was cut, much of Sellers performance was sacrificed; his big speech was chopped out and Sellers lost confidence in the film.
As you'll see to hilarious effect in The Ladykillers, even criminals can be cowed by someone who forcefully reminds them of their old Nanny.

TheMovieBoy Review - Ladykillers, The (2004)
"The Ladykillers" is a heist film, something of a cross between 2001's "Ocean's Eleven" and 2000's delightful Woody Allen caper "Small Time Crooks," that refreshingly avoids most modern conventions of the genre to bring audiences a fresher, funnier, more ingenious take on the shopworn subject.
And funny it is. There are a number of enormous, laugh-out-loud moments throughout, enough to mark it as one of the better comedies in recent memory, with perhaps its brightest concerning the length G.H. goes to in hiding from a visiting police officer.
Resplendently photographed by Roger Deakins (2003's "House of Sand and Fog"), excelling in moody film noir mixed with the sun-dappled Mississippi setting, "The Ladykillers" is a major cinematic surprise that once again places Joel and Ethan Coen near the top of the rank of current filmmakers.

 Ladykillers, The (2004): Reviews
The Ladykillers fits snugly among the Coens' lighter and breezier movies--the ones you forget after you see them once and begin to appreciate and finally adore the more often you revisit them.
The souffle falls a little flat in The Ladykillers, a Coen brothers fl comedy in which the humor seems arch and narrative momentum doesn't kick in until the final third.
Indeed, given that the crime comedy is their preferred genre, The Ladykillers is remarkable mainly for its timidity.

“The Ladykillers” is the most recent foray by the brothers Coen into the theatre.
The greatest strengths of “The Ladykillers” are the short run time (well under two hours) and Tom Hanks.
“The Ladykillers” is not as grand and sweeping, nor as odd, as some of the other Coens’ films, but it was still enjoyable.

Alec Guinness is extraordinary as the buck-toothed mastermind, and once the hijacked lolly is stowed in their digs it's a joy to watch him scheme to eliminate the other crooks and abscond with it all.
THE LADYKILLERS, director Alexander Mackendrick's third Ealing farce, is the final comedy produced by the famous studio and one of its most celebrated.
'The Ladykillers', a classic ealing comedy from the 1950's is basically about a old lady called Mrs Wilberforce, who's husband has died and she now lives with her parrot called General Gordon in a big old house in London.

THE LADYKILLERS (2004) - WIDESCREEN DVD
The pleasure to be had from The Ladykillers is found in the Coens' trademark gallows humour and affection for provincial Damon Runyon mutants, though the core humanity and disarming kindness of the filmmakers' early work has been replaced now with something like mean-spirited caricature.
Though The Ladykillers is economical, wound so tight that the individual character introductions dispense with the niceties of context in a way of which David Mamet would be proud, it falters as a caper and brutalizes as a character-driven comedy.
Unfocused and surprisingly unpleasant, for all its technical acumen the picture is a cold fish--a jape with the audience the sucker, a Fargo without that crucial, defining final speech about the beauty of a new day dawning.

 The Ladykillers
Fittingly, The Ladykillers is a remake of the 1955 movie starring Alec Guinness about a bunch of crooks planning a heist only to have it outwitted by their landlady.
Everything culminates in a farce like sequence at the end, but whether or not the uneven comedy of the rest of the film justifies sitting through to get to this point is another matter.
If anything, The Ladykillers is more amusing than funny, and kind of chugs along until the final act.

In The Ladykillers, Hanks is looser and funnier than he has been in quite some time; he affects a triumphantly baroque Mississippi accent and speaks with the utmost hilarious precision, as if his every sentence were a dewy lover leaving the folds of his bedsheets.
It's a fully imagined comic performance to match that of Alec Guinness, who played the analogous role in the original 1955 comedy from the Ealing Studios.
But the original story (like Assault on Precinct 13, due to be remade soon, and itself a loose remake of Rio Bravo) allows for any number of retellings; the true star of both movies is the premise.

The Ladykillers (2004) - A Hollywood Jesus Movie Review
The Ladykillers, has like no film in recent memory, underscores the problem between Hollywood, which values artistic integrity, and the incredibly huge Evangelical Christian movie going market, which --nearly single handedly-- made Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ a $300 million dollar blockbuster in just 4 weeks.
The 1955 version of “The Ladykillers” starred Guinness as the mastermind (of sorts) whose caper plot goes bust when the unwitting old lady from whom they rent a room catches on.
Besides the title and the basic premise, the 1955 film of “The Ladykillers” is connected to the Coen brothers for another reason.

 Ladykillers - Rotten Tomatoes
It is always difficult to try to recreate a classic movie, so Joel and Ethan Coen took the premise of Alexander Mackendrick's beloved 1955 Ealing Studio caper comedy, THE LADYKILLERS, as the basis for coming up with their own entertaining and bizarre remake.

While all these familiar elements add up to an entertaining film, The Ladykillers lacks the comic highs of their best work, though the film is well worth seeing for Tom Hanks.
The final 30 minutes of the film feels like an extended version of the death of Wheezy Joe from their previous film Intolerable Cruelty, but the fl humor loses shock value fairly early as if Joel and Ethan do not have the heart to stay wicked for such an extended period of time.
Fun while it lasts, The Ladykillers may be the first Coen brothers film that fails to stay with the viewer.
